Whoever stamped the FAAM got the letters out of line. They are supposed to be in a straight line.

My 1948 Super A also has the serial number arranged in that manner. The engine has FAAM followed by number and then a K, I presume because it was a kerosene burner.

Guy Fay's data book lists K as cast iron pistons, yours is the first time I have heard of that letter being used. The fuel designation is a chassis serial suffix, X1 for gas, X3 for kerosene, and X17 for distillate. I don't believe the kerosene and distillate suffixes were used that often, regardless of whether the engine used those fuels. X1 is the most common designation, and then usually only on the H and M and other tractors using the C152 or C248.

My Farmall Super A tractor number is Model FAA serial number 253980. The engine is M255260 K and stamped below the number is FAA. It is set up for burning kerosene, common in New Zealand at that time as kerosene was a third of the price of petrol (gasoline). Has starting tank and adjustable temperature manifold, all in working condition. This tractor has spent all its previous life on two vegetable farms within about 2 miles of each other. It is parts at the moment being restored.
