I have a 41 H distillate. I want to boost the horsepower as much as I can. I don't want to buy a new head (ie 300,350 superH). What else can I do? Bore? How much?

To make good power, you really need a gas head. The biggest bore you can use without doing block work is 3 7/16. 350 pistons are 3 5/8. A cam out of Super H thru 350 also helps.

I have a '40 H that was originally a kerosene model. When I rebuilt it, it got firecrater pistons (std. alt.), a gas head, and a SH cam grind. This made a noticeable difference in the power output and I don't think that it will affect the drive train reliability.

If you don't replace the head (or mill a bunch off )you are wasting your time. Most of the compression increase came from the new head. The difference between the H and SH cams is about 0.020".

if you have a low compression head you are wasting your time doing anything else before you get a better head. i can sell you a 300 gas head with valves ready to install for two hundred and fifty dollars and a little for shipping.

You can bore it, put in domed pistons, change carbs, and do all of the other things that Janicholson mentioned. When you are done, you probably will have spent more than you would have buying a Super M or a 400 and you still won't have as much power. . . . Getting more hp out of an engine can really be fun, but when the other chassis components start to give out, boy will the bills start rolling in.

If it is dead stock now.
Shave .080 off of the head
Put in 350 high altitude pistons/sleeves (firedome) That is as big as you can go without boring the block and going sleeveless (not a good idea)
Use a 350 intake and carb (SM or 400 carb can be adjusted to fit as well)
350 cam or grind
electronic ign with a few degrees extra advance (with premium fuel)
High ratio rocker arms
A five angle valve job (do not polish the intake)
Match the intake to the head
Tune it on a dyno
Spend bucks for plastic trophys and enjoy. JimN
