I bought a 806 diesel that had been used only to run an irrigation well for the past 10 years. The engine had been overhauled a few years before. The tractor starts and runs great with plenty of power. The problem is it makes a tapping noise sometimes. It is not a knock. I have adjusted the valves and checked with the valve cover off. Still can't pin point the source of the noise. Other people have told me to just run it and don't be bothered by the tapping. Has anyone else had this problem. If so what was the source of the noise.

Friend of mine bought a 1206 that made a tapping noise, would come and go. Finally got bad enough he couldn't ignore it. Turned out it was a sleeve worked loose. Tractor is sitting now waiting for time to rebuild.

is the tapping coming from an injector or the fuel pump perhaps?

I would guess the injector since the noise is near the valve cover by the injectors. If that is the source what is the cure for the noise or do you just run as is.

I have a 97 Dodge/Cummins pickup with 300k miles on it. It started making a taping noise like that. The fuel lift pump (not the injector pump) has a primer knob on it to full the fuel system after you change the filter. If I hold my thumb on that primer knob, the clicking goes away. so I"ve decided its a weak spring in the lift pump, and it can"t follow the cam lobe properly, and makes that noise. Under load, it goes away, it just does it under light fuel demand or at idle.
