How do you remove the clutch pilot bushing from the crank of a farmall c123 engine? Is there a special tool or do you just split it with a chisel. I have a small gear puller but even it is too large for the job. Also how does the throw out bearing come off?

Hey glenster that looks like just what I am looking for. Where do you live? I'll be over to borrow it. LOL. Thanks to all who replied. I will try your suggestions. One of them might work. I will also see if I can locate a small puller that will fit inside the bushing. At least now I know that I should change all the parts while I have it apart.

If you do not have a blind hole bearing puller, here are two other methods you can try.

Find a shaft that is a close fit inside the bushing. Fill the cavity behind, and the bushing, with grease. Start the shaft into the bushing and give it few whacks with a hammer. You may need to add more grease as the bushing starts coming out.

If the bushing is worn too much to get a good fit on a chunck of shaft, get a tap that will thread into the bushing and screw that in until it bottoms out. Keep turning and the bushing should be forced out.

Throwout bearing is pressed onto the carrier. Set it in a vise & take a large tool(read 3/4 drive socket) and knock it out. Use the vise to press the new bearing back in place. Rotate it several times to press it on straight.

Are you sure the pilot bushing needs replacing? A slide hammer with a hooked puller adapter will work.

Well the pilot bushing actually feels pretty good but since things are all apart and the package I bought had all new parts I was going to replace all of them. Seemed like it would be the smart thing to do but I have never done any of this before so each step is a new learning experience.

The clutch itself was still good but had less than a third of its life left till the rivets started rubbing. The alignment shaft I made up felt only slightly looser in the old bushing compared to the new bushing that came in the kit.

By all means now is the time to replace both. The slide hammer is best way to remove the pilot bng either make one or rent, borrow whichever.
