1066 Question

I have a 1066 Diesel Turbo that I only use about once a month. I started the tractor to use it and I now have a lot of "steam" or "smoke" coming from a tube that comes off the right side of the engine and goes straight down to the frame. I don't know what this tube is for or what the "mystery" fog is that my tractor is now spewing. Please help!!

Well...these comments are interesting as well as the topic.

I have a 766 that sits too much, too. I also noticed what seemed to me quite a bit of vapor coming from the vent tube from time to time, and this has caused me some concern. One cool morning this summer as I started mowing and then let the tractor idle a bit while yakking at my brother, it seemed real bad.

I bought this tractor as having a rebuilt engine, and I have talked to the fellow that did some work on the engine. He confirms it being rebuilt, and doggone it! The thing just starts amazingly easy so compression certainly isn't an issue.

I have just relegated the vapor as being the nature of the beasts. Funny though...I have used the 766 quite a bit recently and haven't paid attention to see if the vapor has abated. I'll look next time.

I hate letting tractors sit, but what are you gonna do?

They appear to smoke more at dawn and dusk. That low hanging sun really catches your eye when it reflects off the vapor.

Your right. A brand new engine does it worse than one that is broke in with a couple hundred hours on it.

Just the nature of the animal and ya gotta think of it as seeing the tractor's "breath". With time, you just learn to ignore it. :>)

Geez, Allan! Where are all the hills? :)

I guess where you live out there in the flats, you can't own an old JD. A buddy of mine says The Good Lord made hills to park JDs on so you can bump start the danged things. :)

Make sure you are not getting coolant into the oil. After letting the engine sit for at least overnight, the longer the better, loosen the engine oil drain plug. Unscrew the plug just enough to let it start to drip. Drain out a tablespoon or two. Catch what comes out in a clean container and take a good look at what you get. Just oil? the best you can hope for. Clear water with no indication of coolant? Probably just condensation. The tractor need to be worked harder or change the oil more often. Milky oil with coolant? Get you checkbook out. You most likely are going to need sleeves and pistons.

if it is only used 1 time a month it is probably condensation in the crank case.
as the oil heats up the moistures leaves through the blow by tube causeing smoke.
some is normal for any older diesel engine.

The 1066s that were equipped with the turboed diesel seem to be the worst.

that's funny,we have not had many problems with the 1066s or 1086s.
the worst ones are the 14s.

I guess the youngsters just aren't used to being around (any) older engines.

The best way to cure that problem is to just quit looking at it. :>)

That would be the engine vent tube. What you are indicating isn"t abnormal. Provided it isn"t leaking great quantities of oil out of it, I"d think you"re fine. My 1466 does the same thing and the engine is freshly rebuilt.

It is your engines vent tube - a small amount of "smoke " is normal an exessive amount indicates a lot of blowby past the pistons and rings. Does the engine seem to have decent compression on all 6 cylinders? Or does it seem to be missing? My 1066 has always had a little blowby out the vent tube.
