I think I have done everything to this engine and it still doesnt run right. This is a 301 gas. I have adjusted the valves and the carb is adjusted right. It sounds good when it is running at one rpm. But when you snap the throttle it slobbers and sometimes dies. It did this before I installed electronic ignition. It did it afterwards as well. It is timed correctly and the spark is good. I think the advance in the distributor isnt working right. What do I need to do to rebuild the distributor so that it runs smoothly? Where can I get the parts? What do I need to watch out for so that I put it back together right? Also the tractor pops back out through the carb sometimes while I am starting it. Could this be part of the distributor not advancing correctly?

Can't remember if there is a roll pin or straight pin in the drive gear on this distributor. Have you had the distributor out to look at the drive end? If there is a roll pin, It might have enough slop in the gear & shaft to cause timing problems. Unlikely, but worth a look.

The advance mechanism on this tractor is mechanical and utilizes 2 weights that are attached to the breaker shaft (which slips over the distributor shaft) and precision springs. As the rpm of the shaft increases, the centrifugal force on the weights increases. This causes the spring to lengthen and the advance curve to change correspondingly. Problems with the advance system will cause backfiring or kick-back at start up or hard starting depending on where it is stuck. You need to remove the plate behind the points to be able to see the weights. More than likely a spring broke or the peg wore or broke. Also, you cannot replace the springs separately, so you have to buy two of them, and don't try getting ones from a junk yard, because those springs will be in just as bad of shape.

If everything checks out with the distributor check your intake manifold for vaccum leaks, very common to that engine. Spray carb cleaner were the manifold contacts the head. Rpm should not change. Also is your heat riser valve on the manifold working? The thermostatic spring broke on my 706 once and it would stumble like yours does. Replaced the spring and all was well again.

The Advance components are behind the breaker plate. They are pretty much like an old fashoned governor with springs and weights. To see if it is working, use a timing light on the front pulley (make a series of marks evenly spaced from the TDC mark with a dry erase marker toward the direction of rotation, As the engine speed is increased the timing should advance past the marks progressively to the max advance. If the marks jump around a lot, the bushings may also be worn out. All can be repaired, or purchase a rebuilt unit. JimN

If it pops back through the carb, it is running lean, and a lean condition would also make it slobber. It will only act worse when cold and gets somewhat better as it warms up. Better give the idle mixture and high speed screws a turn to the rich until it stops doing that but only when it is warmed up. On my H and M I do have the screws leaned out some and have to let the engine warm up some before moving it. Too rich will wash the oil off the cyl walls with raw gas and cause wear when cold. Too lean will make it slobber when letting the clutch out or under load when warmed up. Tinker with the mixture until you find the sweet spot where it runs good under working conditions. If you get black smoke, too rich.
