Has anyone seen the new precleaners that some folks are carrying for the a/b/c tractors? They are the glass jar types as used on the H"s and M"s. Don"t think they"re original, but look so cool.

Question is, since this is the breather pipe and not just an air intake, and the normal cap has that wire mesh in it, will just a precleaner work properly? I"m assuming one could expect a bit of oil mist to collect in the precleaner assembly and jar and look terrible after a while, no? The h"s have that separate breather pipe to eliminate this.

What do you guys think?

They were a factory option... don't take an H or M jar cleaner and make it fit an A.

There were four sizes:

One fit the A, B, C and Supers through the 140/240 etc.

Another for the H through 350/460

A larger one for the M through 450/560

And a really big one for the W-9 through 650

I'm not sure if they were an option or the same on the 460/560... I think they went to the plastic bowl on those...

Early A's used the 1 3/8 air stack, don't know about later ones. Stack measures 1.8 on my B & C

The glass jar precleaner was an extra cost option at the time of purchase. Don't worry about clearance, you can rotate the precleaner. Biggest problem will be finding one that small.

I'm confused. I thought the A and B series tractors were in most respects mechanically the same. Isn't the breather cap actually on the valve cover and the item with the jar a precleaner for the air filter an just an alternative to the mesh cover cap? Are we talking about the right things?

Yes we are. I just made a fool of myself. The precleaner goes on the air intake, not the breather pipe. Sorry.

Ok, better question. Will the glass jar precleaner assembly clear the muffler? My air intake on the A is pretty close to the stack compared to the H.

Has anyone actually bought one of these yet?

You didn't make a fool of yourself. You want to see a fool? Give me two feet of brake line and watch me make a gas line out of it! I don't have a lot of use for the jar pre-cleaners. We have one on the MTA and in four years it hasn't accumulated much of anything. Nice place to display your JD toys, though.
