I was out bushhogging for about an hour today & my 706 just quit on me. Tried starting it back up & it will stay running for a couple of seconds & then quit again. It has plenty of gas & it doesn't sound like it is starving for gas when it dies. Any ideas? Help please.

Thanks for all the help & responses. I will swap out the coil. Another question I have (sorry, but it is a new tractor & just trying to fix all the problems before the snow starts to fly). I noticed that NONE of guages are working (temperature & fuel). However, the oil pressure & alternator lights appear to work. Any ideas on why the temperature & fuel guages are not working & what to look for & what to do. THANKS AGAIN for ALL the help!!

Do you have a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil? Hal

Not to sound stupid (but I am when it comes to mechanics), but what is a ballast resistor. I looked at the wiring from the ignition to the coil & all that I see is a little rectangular shaped thing about 1"x3" that the wiring from the ignition goes to. Would this be the ballast resistor??

 UPDATE in reply to ggg7lazy77, 09-15-2007 15:53:12
I let the tractor sit for about 45 minutes & tried starting it again & it started & ran fine. Any ideas what would cause it to do what it did? Thanks

Gasser?

You need a coil.

Allan

Allan did not say why you need a coil. The internal wires of the windings are very small gauge and sometimes if you have a break in the wire it will stay connected when the coil is cold but when the heat of the engine warms it up it will expand, opens the break, you loose the connection and spark stops. An unusual problem, but have had two or three engines (boat, tractor, etc) act this way over the course of 30 years.
