I bought this Super C about a month or so ago. Is serial # FC186528DT which makes it a 1954, I believe. It’s got a strange front end on it and I’m wondering if there was such a thing is an industrial version. I’ve sandblasted a few of the parts that I’ve worked on so far and the original color seems to be yellow everywhere. Since then is been painted red and then orange. I probably will do it red just because! It has a grader blade underneath and a ripper that fits in the fasthitch. I suspect it probably was owned by some small municipality or some such. Thought it would be just the ticket to maintain my driveway.
The engine was stuck but I’ve since got it freed up and rebuilt the carb, which was a disaster. Since I got it freed up I thought I might just try to get it started before the major overhaul. I currently have the head off just to look inside but it didn’t look as bad as I feared. I found new wheels & tires for the front so at least I can roll it around now. Any thoughts or ideas as to the front-end setup?

My lists shows a D suffix for 5,000 foot high altitude and T for a low-drum cotton picker. Each of those is possible (not sure what year they started putting cotton pickers on Super Cs). It seems an unlikely combination unless they were ordering picker tractors with high altitude pistons to get a little power boost. I'm sure a Super C with a picker could use all the help it could get. Have you checked the engine number for suffix codes? The D should be on it too. Any evidence of left over cotton picker parts on the tractor?

I know on the picture on #298 it looks short,but they`re only giving a front view.Side view would be more telling. I have a 340 Farmall with a WF(same as 240 Farmall WF)and it looks identical to picture Tim posted.Mark

Your looking at the International 240 Utility front end and that IS swept back. We are talking about the Farmall wide front. Look it up again on the online catalog-it`s there. Mark

Here’s is a little better shot of the front end since I put the new wheels on it. I’m wondering, not only what the front end was from, but if it might have been put on at the factory? The whole tractor appears to have been originally painted yellow including the front end and old wheels. I’ve disassembled various pieces all over it at this point and the bottom layer is always yellow.

Tim: It is possible to put 240, 340 or 404 hub for pressed steel rims on a SC, however I don't think that happened. The wide front pivot casting bolted to the tractor bolster is either 240, 340 or 404. That casting, although it has the same bolt pattern is quite different on the SC. Further to this SC did not have the wish bone brace back to the clutch housing. 240, 340 and 404 did and it was exactly same as on your tractor. I'm calling it a 240, 340 or 404 wide front. There was yellow primer used on 40 series tractors.

OK, so it sounds as if it wouldn’t have been a front end put on originally at the factory since those models weren’t made till several years later then, right? I was cleaning and sandblasting the gas tank last night and did discover that it had an additional layer of red under the yellow. That’s the first part that I've found that the bottom layer was red. However the yellow appeared to be put on before the tank was installed, as it was yellow all over, even under the bolts. Just wish I knew more about the history of this tractor. Any significance in the DT in the serial #?

I was looking on the Super C catalog for the brace. Even the 240 Farmall has the tie rods behind the straight axle. # 298 shows the stay rod #16 but it doesn't look the same. David.

Dave: All Farmall 240, 340, 404 and 504 have tyrods out front. It's either a 240, 340 or 404 wide front. 240 and 404 are the same, I expect 340 probably has heavier spindles.

With 6 lugs, Im guessing it came off of a combine. I remeber Dad taking one off of a combine and using it on something, but what it was escapes me.

John: All Farmalls with pressed steel wheels and under 60hp have 6 studs. Starts with 140 all the way to 656.

The 240 front axle is swept back and the tie rods are behind it. I looked in the Case IH online catalog and didn't see the braces? running back to the clutch housing. # 184 Attachments, adjustable wide front. Off something else. David.third party image

Dave: The Farmall 240 wide front is not a swept back axle. Neither are the Farmall 340 or 404. The only IH swept axles are Utilities.

Tim: You have nothing more than a Super C with factory mid mount blade and a wide front from a newer tractor. Very likely 240, 404 or 340. The pressed steel wheels and the axle brace to the clutch housing give it away.
