I need to set my Farmall M up for snow removal. Is it better to put a blade in the front or a 3-point and blade in the rear? I will mainly be cleaning driveways and opening people on a city block after the city crews plow everybody shut. This is a joy of living on a snow route. My back is not getting any younger.

Folks, Here is the snow-plow rig I use on my Super-H. I've had it on my Super-M and H. Works best with six 145# rear wheel weights on the H's and some extra weight on the 3-point hitch. The Super-M seems to only need the extra weight (about 300#) on the 3-point hitch.

I have a blade on the front of my 400. I push the snow out into my yard and lift the blade and drive through the pile without stopping and make a u-turn and go back and make another pass. Two weights per side.

I hope to put a front blade on the C this fall. I enjoy pushing snow with it more than I do with the 400.

I don't know if there is any similarity, but I have a 300u that has a loader, with a 7' pull type snow thrower. I do not have fluid in the tires, 3 wheel weights on each side and use chains. If it starts spinning, just lift the snow thrower a bit, which puts weight back on the rear of the tractor, and away you go. Works very well for me. Around here, these snow throwers sell from $100 to $300. To me it is a big benefit not to need to drive backwards.

I have a farmhand loader with the big bucket and an industrial type blade mounted on the back of my super m. AS has been stated above I use the bucket to push snow and or pile it up when you run out of room. WE sure ran out of room here in Colorado last winter.. I had snow piled as high as the loader could reach.. THe rear blade and the 6 wheel weights make for good traction, but I am getting a set of chains for the icey conditions..

Put a blade on the front. I have a heavy-duty loader on my M. I made a 42" high blade for it that mounts on the loader arms when the bucket is removed. If you put some small glide pieces behind the blade in the center and about a foot from each end, you won't dig up your drive. I have fluid in the rear tires, and two wheel weights on each side. I've never needed chains. If the tractor is on a level stretch of drive or road, I can move through an amazing amount of snow in 4th gear. Last year I added a back blade on the three point hitch. The added weight on the back made things work even better, and I can push snow back when I want to.

I would use something else other than an M for snow removal. Hardly practical. I used a back blade on mine for a few years until I got a 32" snow blower. An M with a back blade is good for maybe 4-5". More than that and you have to make multiple passes. And once you've plowed the first time, when you get more snow it's hard to get the snow off the drive because it doesn't throw it like a snowplow on a pickup. And a front blade will require a lot of rear weight and chains, are you neighbors gonna want their driveways torn up by the chains? I like my snow blower much better, it gets the snow out of the way and I don't have big snow berms when we get multiple snowfall. If you absolutely need a tractor, then a compact 4x4 diesel is the only way to go. You can get snow plows for those I belive. Also a snowblade on a jeep or short bed pickup would be good. I just think the M will be a lot of work, especially with no power steering.

Front end loader works best for me. Here in colorado you sometimes have to pile the snow into high mounds. The kids like nothing better than to have a 10 foot high hill of snow to play on.

I have tried both ways, back blade and loader. Years ago I built a V plow for my loader and have never looked back. Pushing from the front gets the snow out from under the rear tires so there is little need for chains plus you can see whats going on better sine you and the tractor are looking forward. My V plow is almost 9 foot wide so one pass do the drive way and I'm done and I have 1.5 miles of drive I have to plow

The county has one those V-plows mounted on a road grader and that thing will move the snow. Hal
PS: Hope we get lots of snow this winter.

I would prefer to use a loader with a clam shell bucket if possible. Turning around on an M is not only hard on the back but for me would be slightly dangerous as my legs are not quite long enough to clutch and brake when turning around. A good loader bucket can be used to push and then lift the snow out of the way Can also be used to pull snow out of the way and then loaded in the bucket.

I have always used a 3 pt blade for snow removal BUT...if the back isn't getting any younger you might prefer to push it. All that twisting to look behind you is killer on a long day.
