I was at the junkyard today buying my $90 pair of orginal H fenders. third party image I was also pulling some misc. hardware that I needed. So I was pulling some U-bolts off an MD, and I looked over and saw a starter tank! It never occured to me... old MD's started on gas and switched to diesel! So I grabbed a couple of pics and looked around and saw 3 other tanks. There may be others still, because M's and MD's were very popular around here!
I checked the part numbers tonight to make sure, but the part numbers are the same! I just need to find one with the right valve at the bottom and I can buy a new correct fuel line at OEM.
So I'm stoked! What was considered rare happens to be pretty common where I am!
I wonder what they go for on e-bay. Maybe I should hog them up and sell them for restoration money! :D

O.E.M. is not the only place to get that correct fuel line.

I know on these tanks there are at least 3 different style mounts on these tanks and they dont interchange with eachother so keep that in mind. Paul

Tractor club members are coming to the rescue. But we have to find a mutual time to meet. I work mon - fri, and they are church-going folk, which only leaves saturdays or nights, which I'm pretty busy lately. I did get a replacement bolt from the junkyard, but have to figure out what we are going to do about the stud.

A YT member told me in an e-mail that he had a junk H grill and would cut out the part I needed to patch with. It may be in the mail already for all I know. I haven't found an original insert in good condition yet. I've heard the remade ones don't quiet fit right. When I'm ready for it I'll ask more opinions on that, and may get a new one unless I stumble across an orginal, or someone tells me they have one.

Johnny, what you wrote is true for my year ('44) of H, and probably your '43 as well. But earlier versions had a sediment bowl under both tanks, just so you know. I looked it up in the parts manual and verified by tractor serial number that I'm just supposed to have the set up as you describe it. :)

By the way, if you have an extra dual fuel sediment bowl, please let me know. I have been unable to find a used one. Just new, which is a little expensive.

hey mike
I don't know how "rare" they are as most of the tractors came from the factory with one. My mower tractor (43H) has the small tank. Now the correct way to set it up is the glass jar or sediment filter goes under the main tank....The top of the sediment filter has and extra inlet for the small tank. basiclly there is a shut off valve on each tank. the is NO sediment filter on the small tank just a line that goes to the top of the sediment filter, and a shut off valve at the bottom of the small tank. So when you were running tractor fuel or kero you would shut off the big tank and open the little one up and start the tractor on gasoline. with the shutters closed and the manifold adjusted to the proper setting you would wait till it was to the "run" position on the temp gauge. then you would close the little tank off and open the big tanks valve thus switching it to kero or tractor gas. Now adays it dosent pay to run kero and i dont know if they even make tractor gas anymore. Anyways the tank can still be utilized.....I use the small tank for my "reserve" As if i run the main tank dry i just open the small tank and shut the big one so i can make it to the fuel barrel. some guys when using the big tank for gas will open the big and the small tank to give them an extra gallon of gas. I like to keep the small one closed so i have a reserve. But if you leave them both open they will go down at the same rate. But there is only one glass jar that is the sediment filter (mine is glass) and it goes under the big tank and has an extra opening on the grey top piece that allows you to hook up an exta line to it, from the small tank. Lots of farmers and dealers took the small tank off when they converted it to gas, i don't know why, as they could of left the small tank on for a reserve. this may be the reason why most of the tanks are gone. when first going to look at a tractor the two most common things missing are the cover that goes on the nose, and the small tank. luckley mine still had the small tank and all i had to do was swap out the top of the sediment filter to a duel fuel type top and away i went. Also i had to take the little tank off and cleen it out good as the cap was missing when i got it. Hope this helps.

There must have been a couple of different set ups from the factory then. My '40 has the dual inlet sediment bowl on the starter tank only. There is a petcock on the line running from the main tank to the sediment bowl. As the fuel was filtered from both tanks with the dual inlet, there was no need for one on each tank.

Well crap, I may have posted too soon. I went out to eyeball the placement on my H and it doesn't look like the same set up at all. But the part numbers are exactly the same, and, at least on the tank I took a look at on the MD, the tank is welded, or affixed somehow without bolts, to that mounting bracket.

Anyone know if I'm barking up the wrong tree?
