826 Fuel Cap Not Venting

I was working down ground the other day with the 826 and came in to fuel up after running about four hours. When I twisted the cap, there was a loud inrush of air and the tank popped. Obviously the cap is not letting air into the tank as the pump sucks it out and it's creating a vacuum in the tank. I don't see how the cap is supposed to vent (if it does) and I don't see any other tank vents. I still don't have a full set of manuals that covers this in detail. Anybody know? Thanks

Jim,

You can get a brand new triple baffle gas cap for your 826 for FREE from ihgascap.com. I have ordered several from there. They have two vent holes in the top of the cap. They are free, no shipping fees. They are nice caps and include the warning decal.

go to www.ihgascap.com

Andy.

That's only for gas tractors. Jim's 826 is a diesel.

I know the program is for gas tractors, I never seen him mention that it was a diesel, so I checked the list of tractor models that were eligible to receive a cap and there was a 826 in there.

Yes, because it was avalible with a gas engine. Never seen a gas powered 826 or 856 in person.

Owen: Well, I see a dimple in the center of the tall cap. No hole there, but I'll use a jet drill to see if it's just blocked. Thanks!

If you have the tall cap (about 3" high, also called triple baffle), current production caps have two vent holes near the center on top. Earlier style tall caps had just one hole in the center. Low style caps had the vents on the underside just inside the outer edge or a single hole in the center on top.

If your tractor has had an auxialry tank on it, the cap may have been replaced with a non-vented style. They used a vented cap on the second tank and the non-vented cap on the main tank. This caused fuel to be forced from the secondary tank to the main tank as fuel was used.

If someone has replaced the cap with one for an 86 series tractor, it will also be non-vented. Those tractors used a vent incorporated into the fuel sendor unit.

Owen, I have a IH 424 diesel that has the opposite problem (if it is a problem). After running the tractor for a few hours and the removing the fill cap to check fuel level - it is pressurized. Makes a perceptible "swish" blowing sound. Tractor runs fine. This cap is about 2 1/5 to 3" tall, has a seal gasket where it connects to the fill opening, and two opposite tangs to screw it on the tank. I have cleaned it out a couple times in my parts washer - same results. Do I just need a new cap (duh) or forget it. Don't know if the tank is swelling or not, but if it is it can't be good for it. Appears to be original cap. What should I do? Thanks ! bob

After cleaning the top of the cap, make sure the vent hole(s) is/are open. Diesels seem to be more likely to get plugged up than gasoline models. The fuel does not evaporate as fast so there is more chance for dust to stick to it. You might try squirting some carb or brake cleaner in the vent holes to see if that will open it up.

There should be no reason for any pressure to build up in the tank other than normal expansion of the fuel and air in the tank as it warms up from engine heat. Either you have an extremely well sealed cap or you are getting air drawn into the fuel system and being returned to the tank. To check it I would release the pressure in the tank after it had time to get to maximum temperature and then continue to use the tractor. If you then have pressure rather than a slight vacuum you are getting air drawn in somewhere. It is quite posible to have a leak in the fuel system where air is drawn in but no fuel actually leaks out. This is more likely to happen when the fuel filters start to get restricted.

Owen, thanks for the reply. I'll try cleaning again and also change the fuel filters. They are about due anyway. Thanks again. bob
