Hello all!!

I just recently became the proud new owner of a 1968 IH 544. It is a one family owned machine with 2500 original hours. Gas motor, tin straight, paint good, and tires great. Seems to be a real gem so far. A few minor repairs to do. $4600 ( I think it was a deal :) )

Just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom or advice to share on the 544.

Thanks for helping a novice out. Proud to be red on the outside, purple on the in. GO CATS!!!

Take Care.

You did good on the price. It's a pretty stout tractor for the horsepower it puts out. We've got a 544 on the farm we use quite a bit and she's been a workhorse. Ours is a row crop, gas, with synchro transmission. The only thing I've had to do to it in ten years is just preventative maintenance...it's tough to b*tch about that!

Hcc No you did not pay too much. I gave 3650 for a super H. I am very happy with it. I would of gave 5000 for it. infact my final bid on ebay was 4444. Ebay will only use what is needed to win the bid. (in 50 dollar increments)

Both my dad and I thought this one was too good to let get away. I would have paid full asking price, but it's always worth a try to talk them down. Luck has it, it worked!!

Just think of it as a four cylinder version of the 656.

If you are happy, then it was a good deal.
If it is what you need and wanted, it is a good deal even if you paid top dollar for it.
Better to pay more for a good machine than to be disappointed with one that has to be presuaded to work for you.

Your opinion is what counts the most.

No, you didn't pay too much if she's field-ready. You didn't say if it's a row-crop or a utility, or if it's a gear drive or hydro. The 544 could come in 8 different configurations, depending on if you wanted a row-crop or a utility with the C-200 gas/LP or D-239 diesel with a gear drive or hydro. As far as I can tell, the row-crop-diesel is the rarest version, and I finally found one with a gear drive trans about 4 months ago. By the time I had it hauled from AZ to MN, I had as much into it as you do, and mine needed extensive work, including replacing the TA and tearing the transmission halfway apart to replace the suction tube that some genius relpaced with a hyd. hose. Your gasser will be much easier to find parts for. On a gear drive row-crop, 99.9% of the parts from the clutch back are identical to the 656 gear drive row crop, of which they built 10's of thousands.

It's a row crop w/ a synchro trans.
