Has anyone experienced hard starting with fresh 386 plugs ? I just replaced the d21 champ with 386 autolite and its harder to start.I think it ran smoother with champs too but not sure, maybe I will clsoe the gap a bit to see if that helps-Thats what I get for changing them,it ran fine the plugs have been in there at least 6 years and I thought why not put in a fresh set..... .

Trivia not too many people know. AC and Champion spark plugs were named after the same man.

At the start of the last century, when the automobile industry was in its infancy, a man named Albert Champion started a spark plug manufacturing company and branded the plugs "AC" from his initials. Around 1915, he sold the company to Buick, which is why GM uses AC spark plugs to this day.

Mr. Champion then started another spark plug company and branded them "Champion" after his last name.

I know ya'll have been laying awake nights wondering about that.

i use autolite 3116 in all of our old gas tractors. .025 gap with points. .040 gap with electronic ignition and a good coil.

I've always found just the opposite. For what it's worth, the Champion D-21s should have been replaced with Autolite 388s.

I dont know how I ended up with the 386 plug but it looks like the 3116 is the suggested plug-So I guess I will get 4 check gap and see what happens-if it aint broke ..... ..... .....

There does seem to be some discrepancy. The supplier that I get my Autolite plugs from recommends the 386 for a Farmall H, and the 388 is one step hotter. At the same time, the Autolite Chart recommends the 3116 for the same application. I am using the 386 in my 1950 H, and it runs better than it ever did with A.C.s and much better than it did with Champions. Guess I need to get some 3116s also and give those a try.

Rusty, my understanding is that the 386/388's are a resistor plug and the 3116's are not. If you have battery ignition, resistor plugs may be OK. I've run them on magneto's too, but I think the 3116's run just a little better on a magneto.

Or, I may just be imagining things too ;)

Red Dave - I think you're onto something on the resistor plugs! Here's an experience I had:

A friend of mine had all sorts of running problems with her magneto-equipped, hand-start John Deere A.

After much fussing with new plugs (Autolite 386's), wires, magneto internals, etc. out of frustration I checked the resistance between each plug's terminal and center electrode. Discovered the resistance on both was close to 10K ohms.

I then checked a Champion D21 plug and found the resistance was ~0 ohms. So installed a fresh set of D21's into the A. The tractor now cranks up and runs fine.

All I can figure is the magneto has trouble generating a hot spark thru a resistor-type plug.

----

Incidentally also I believe you are correct about the 3116 being a non-resistor equivalent to the 386. However I cannot recall now where I found that information.

...Bob

Thanks Bob, check out my post above. I found some information on Autolite's website regarding the 386's and 3116's.

I gotta do some homework on it. I don't remember the supplier making any referance to the fact the 386s are resistor plugs, but I may have missed it. For sure a non-resistor pug should give a slightly hotter spark.

I don't know what your application is, but Autolite reccomends 3116 for many IH tractors.

Here is an Autolite chart. You'll have to scroll way down, but most IH stuff is on it.
