For anyone who read my previous posts, I have some better information.

Recap - I own a "53 super H, number 540J.

Engine has no c-164 cast into the block.

Cast into the block above the filter housing is the following - 6695 DE. (am told this is the cast code for the 152 block)

Below that, also cast is 2-BE. (not sure what that is)

Serial # prefix is IBHM. The "I" looks like an afterthought, or separate stamp.

Here"s the better info. I can now see that the date code is 9-9-M. I previously thought it to have an x code.

If I"m correct, the M makes it a "43. There is olive green paint under the yellow, which is under the red!!!

Question is this - could it be a war year power unit?

I"m sure it"s been rebuilt at some point - runs too clean. Can you make a 152 into a 164? Originally more than just a bigger bore in the supers, no? Crankshaft, bearings, etc... I guess I won"t know unless I open it.

Just can"t see why someone would put a 152 block into a super H. Why not rebuild the 164? Unless the block was shot, then it"s availability I guess.

you can't make an h into a super h's displacement without boring the block.

Yes you can change sleeves and pistons and with the hi--domes probably have more hp than original SH.

You have a 1943 I-4 engine in your 1953 Super H H.

NSPEC, maybe we should get together, I've got a '46 H with a '53 C-164 power unit engine in it.

seems that quite a few were repowered with regular H motors. Probably the cheapest way to do it. Even today if you shop around you can find a running H for the cost of an overhaul kit for the super. There is nothing wrong with your tractor having a different motor as long as it does what you want.

Yes the 152 can be taken to 164. Most have been. Maybe the original block froze and busted or anything could have happened to it. It will be fine with the engine you have. If it runs good and has enough power to suit your needs I would leave it be. Could be a power unit. Not really up on all the prefixes and don't have a chart for them.

so let me ask this question...

what about the carb? I've never had it off, but I'm almost positive it's the super h carb on the smaller engine. The choke lever is on the engine side of the carburator.

Does it matter which carb you use, or is the bigger carb for the bigger engine? What would happen with the big carb on the small engine?

If the choke lever is on the inside, most likely it is a Super carb, but the super Ms, 300s, 350s, 400s, and 450s also had the choke lever on the inside. I know of several Hs with the 152 engine that are now using the bigger carb such as found on an M, and they all run just fine.

The SH carb looks like an M carb, larger obvious float bowl. The H carb has a float more or less behind the carb toward the block. JimN
