IH 384 Steering problems...need help

I have a IH 384 that I started having steering problems with last weekend. The tractor has power steering on it and was running fine and then all of a sudden, it didn't want to steer to the left. The tractor still turns easily to the right, but not to the left. If you let the tractor go a few feet while steering to the right and not put any pressure on the steering wheel, it will eventually let the steering wheel "relax" and steer back straight but with hardly any turning direction to the left. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this? I haven't actually checked the fluid levels, but was thinking that they were probably fine since I just had my dealer change the fluid about a year ago and the fact that the power steering is "working" since the tractor is able to turn to the right. Thanks for any comments back.

I had a 354 and think the steering is the same. It's difficult to know for sure, but it sounds like the problem is in the steering box itself, not the hydraulics. The shaft that has the worm gear on it is held in place by caged ball bearings on the top and bottom of the worm. If those bearings self destroy (and they are kind of flimsy) the worm has a lot of space to float up and down. Pull up and push down on the steering wheel. There should not be any slack. Usually the culprit is a leaking output shaft seal loosing all the grease out of the steering box. If the box is ok, the problem could be in the directional valve, but it should still steer, just take more effort.

Thanks Genep....I'll look at the steering wheel box first. It is just strange since the tractor was working fine and then all of a sudden it stopped wanting to turn left at all. Since it happened all of a sudden, I feel either something broke in the steering wheel box or a directional valve is not working properly. I probably tend to lead toward the directional valve however.
