560 D - Developed a Miss

My dads 560 Diesel has developed a miss., It started as a miss under load from about 1300rpm on down it would lay out. Then over a period of about two days while using it mowing with a rotary cutter it has gone to a full miss at all times. Neither of us are familiar with a Diesel motor. We had the head checked and planed and a head gasket installed about 2 yrs ago or 250 hours. Could this be a Valve or will a bad injector act like this?? IS there any way we could diagnose before taking it to a repair shop?

Thanks in Advance,

Robert

Thanks for all of the GReat Ideas, Yes the head was checked for cracks, valves/seats checked and adjusted by a reputable mechanic when reinstalled.

Its a 63 model, I think the last year for them. Dad is having one of his friends come over this week to help him run through these steps you suggested to see if they can narrow it down.

He said today that when he pulls it hard, it will soot up with black smoke and then finally clean out after it catches its wind.

I have a 1959 560 Diesel. ITs the first modern tractor I have ever owned.

My first tractor and one I still have is my Great Uncles 1944 Slant Dash JD A. Its a novelty and family heirloom. I have used it for the past 5 yrs but WOW, this 560 with live hydraulics and live power is wonderful. I do miss the Torquey feel of the Popper and the 400 Farmall I grew up on but I cant believe the fuel economy and smoothness of my 560. Oh, the power steering and wide front are nice as well.

When you had the head off, were the valves gone through/ checked? Second item-- are the valves gapped correctly? To check for compression getting past the injector seal, use oil from a squirt can & look for bubbles in the suspect area while the engine is running.

While idling, crack loose each injector line, one at a time. Each good cylinder will nearly cause it to stop running. When the bad cylinder is cracked, it won't change. Swap injectors between cylinders to see if the dead cylinder changes location. This narrows down the diagnosis process dramatically. JimN

Jim, that does usually work, but when my 350 injector was bad it made no difference at all. On all 4 it sounded as if it were dieing. I even decided that wasn't the troble. Thought maybe since a little water was going somewhere that the head gasket was bad. So, I spent the 100 bucks and put on the gasket. Didn't help a bit. I then done what I should have to start with and went to pulling injectors. Tne number two nozzle was shot.

No Unusual Noises, just hisses like a bad valve on a gas engine and low on power. Didnt go all at once, got worse over a couple days.

We can pull the injectors I presume and run a compression test.

What kind of compression should one of those things have??

No fluids where they shouldnt be and yes is smokes a little more than usual, more black and sooty when you pull, not white like getting water.

If it is hissing you may just need a new seal on an injector. My 666 had one that done that. Sounded like air. I just took out the injector and cleaned it, the seat and brass seal and tightened it back up. Works fine now.

Robert, my guess would be an injector. My 350 developed a miss and it would just miss at mid throttle ranges and was worse when no load at all was on it. While pulling hard you could not hardly even notice the miss. As time when on it got worse. when I tore it down the little nipple on one injector was burned off. Causes a bad spray pattern and misfiring.

Is the tractor smoking? Is the engine heating? Any abnormal noises?
