We have an old tractor in the shop getting repaired/restored. I request your help with identification.
This one has sheet metal parts with emblems that say it is a "140", "McCormick", "International" However, the serial number is 54286 stamped on the ID plate . That number isnt listed on the page of 140 model serial numbers found here. There are other numbers cast into the block, but I didnt want to remove the oil filter to read them. What do those numbers mean? As we progress with the painting, I will be able to see those numbers.

This one is a gas burner 4-speed.

-Mostly just want to know the model year, but
any information or links would be appreciated. Thanks.

wow...
I thought I would check here in a day or two and maybe get some answer. You guys are fast!

I am in school and this is a project we have going. The instructor thinks it is a much older model. I copied a page of model numbers and brought it to class. (If that instructor has any sense he will read the web address on that page and become a member here.)

This old tractor is the "stepchild" in our shop. Everyone wants to work on the big shiney green ones. But not me ! Old red is a classic.

Hey, thanks again.

Hey that sounds familiar. Everyone up at the school I'm going to thought I was crazy when I brought in the old F-12 my first year. They all had Farmalls and dear johns from the 50s to the 70s. Nothing wrong with the Farmalls, as for the dear johns, I told em I rather have an old iron horse than some young buck.

We just get what they give us to work on. Mostly well worn and broken JD"s. We fix them for the price of parts.

The 140 is getting special treatment for some reason. Every drop of mud and grease is removed and the rust is being brushed and grinded down before paint. I dont understand the politics involved, but the owner should be happy.

Mud, looks like you have an early 1975 140. Look under Serial Numbers at the left, then under International & Farmall, then under I-140 F-140. Your serial number is very close to the beginning number for 1975. This tractor should have a square shaped grill and the operator seat should be off set to the right and the engine off set to the left. This was the last in the line of the Farmall A(started production in(1939) ,SuperA,100,130,140. Dave

Yes. you are correct. This one has some attachments that might be the "find-a-depth" or some such name that I have read about here. I think it is still being used by a gardener/hobbiest type person.

You have a LATE one... 1975 production STARTED with Serial # 54273, so it looks to me as if your's (54286) would be the 14TH 140 produced in 1975.
