I just installed a Hitachi alternator on my H, but it doesn't charge. It's a NAPA rebuilt. I hooked it up as a negative ground one wire as per some instructions I read here some time ago, S connected to bat terminal & bat terminal to the right side of amp gauge. Left side of amp gauge goes to hot side of starter button. I made all my connections with the battery unhooked.I will probably bring the alternator back & have it checked. I'm guessing I did something wrong, I'm just not smart enough to know what it is. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Sonny

There is one instruction that you have left out. The "L" spade is used for the idiot light and also energizes the alternator. You need to run a hot wire to the "L" spade and you will be good to go. You can just run a switched hot wire to the "L" spade and you will have to turn it on for a short time each time you start the tractor. If you leave it on, after you have shut the tractor down it can run down the battery. I use a one way diode that only allows the juice to go one way and will not let a back feed. You can get these at Radio Shack for about $2.00 and you will not have to manual switch the wire.

GOOD LUCK

Look at this:

If you have an AMMETER, it needs to go between the output of the alternator and the positive side of the battery. A VOLTMETER goes in parallel from the ignition switch to ground. Forget the one wire and do it like this:
