Some F12 tractors seem to have what looks like a gasoline primer device which sticks up through the rear of the hood. Other F12 tractors do not have this device. What is the purpose of this item, and why don't all F12 tractors have one?

It is a fuel line vent used on the "Kerosene Special" tractors.

It also allowed for the return to the pump of fuel not taken by the carburetor. The fuel could not go back to the fuel tank as it might be gasoline or distillate/kerosene. The gasoline tractors only had a T junction, most went back to the tank.

You will find that item on models that ran distilate (kerosene). What it was for is if you were running distilate and the tractor stalled for some reason you would drain the fuel system and pour gas in the plug on the top so that the engine could be started again. The engine would not start on distilate.
