350 Utility won’t start??

I was plowing snow last spring when my 350 Utility quit running (it acted like it ran out of gas, but it was half full). It turns over and there is spark, but oil from the air filter will splash back out of the air intake when cranking… I have checked the timing with a light, and it shows OK. Has anyone experienced problems with the timing gears, and how difficult are they to fix?

Thank you in advance for any feedback and support.

Pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring No1 to TDC on the compression stroke. This probably will take a helper to crank and for you to hold your thumb over the plug hole until you feel compression. Once you feel the compression you can drop a large handle screwdriver into the plug hole, then watch the screwdriver rise as the engine is slowly cranked. When it quits rising
remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be the No1 plug tower. Both valves on that cylinder should be closed too. You can still have fire even if jumps time, but not firing in the correct order.

If this is ok hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if there's good suction and if your hand gets wet with gas. You should run a compression check on all cylinders and compare the readings. Hal

You say oil blows back. I would first start by making sure you don't have to much oil in the air cleaner or maybe its got a lot of water in with the oil. If the air cleaner is to full it will choke the engine and flood it and it will not run. You also need to check if your getting fuel to the carb and then if its getting into the carb.

Before you tear your tractor to pieces, check the simple stuff first. If the timing gears were the problem, you would not be getting a spark, let alone a spark that's "on time." The crank gear drives the cam gear, and the cam gear drives the distributor, so if the distributor is turning, the cam is turning.

Sure, there is gas in the tank, but is it getting to the carburetor? If it's getting TO the carburetor, is it getting THROUGH the carburetor?

Have you pulled the oil cup off the air cleaner?
Have you pulled the air hose off the carburetor intake? Does it have good suction when you crank the engine?

You can pull the valve cover off easily. See if the valves are moving.

If the cam key went out, and then jambed from flakes of metal in the joint, He might have the cam symptoms but perfect ignition. What do you think. JimN

This is everything that I have done / checked.

Pulled the fuel line off the carb to check if gas was flowing into it… It is

Cleaned out the bowl of the carburetor and opened the drain on the bottom of the bowl … Got Gas.

Pulled off the valve cover, cranked the engine … all valves moving

Re-gapped / filed the points … rotor is turning

Removed the oil cup (to keep from splashing it all over) and cranked the engine … nothing as far as it starting.

You have me curious you are talking about suction at the carburetor intake and I seem to be experiencing back pressure, but I have not checked with my hand over the intake hose while cranking??? I will try to check this tonight.

Ken:

It could be a stuck or broken intake valve (or a weak/broken intake valve spring) allowing air to blow back through the intake path on the compression stroke. I'm thinking this may interfere enough with the air/fuel flow to the other cylinders to keep the engine from running at all.

When you say the valves are moving, do you mean the actual valves or just the rocker arms? Do all the valve stems follow the rocker arms all the way up when the rocker arms rise?

I would second El Toro's assertion that a compression check will tell you a lot at this point. A compression check with good results would be pretty strong evidence that the valve train is working properly.

I want to thank all of you for your time and suggestions. I will get my hands on a compression gauge and do this test along with checking that it hasn't "jumped time". I will keep my eye on this forum for other responses and post again when I have something further to share.

Thanks again to all!!!!!
