I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is I rubbed a little dope on my flare fitting threads...including the factory installed receiver for the flare fitting...and BOTH ends of my gas line are drip free, no doubt about it. Bad news is that after a few minutes of messing around I noticed a drip on the bottom of the bowl and found that the factory installed shut off valve is leaking. COULD ONLY HAPPEN TO ME! I never touched it, honest!

Further, since the leak is real slow I decided to keep it dried up and try to finally start the tractor. The newly charged battery would not even turn over the starter. I tried to jump it with the charger/starter but this only made it turn over slowly....not enough to start it. SOOOO the battery is going up to be tested and I am having a quick lunch and taking the kids down to the fair to pack things up. Will be back for the WNBA playoff game (girls b-ball is huge in this house) and will see if time allows later to try again. Otherwise....tomorrow.

The packing nut Jim mentioned and the tension on the nut at the bottom of the bail that holds the bulb in place are the things to check. Both fairly easy fixes.

Don't be tolerating a leak, especially indoors and especially if yu're doing things like hooking up batteries near the leak.

Naw, I wouldn't do that. If this tractor starts earning it's keep around here it will win a place indoors and there are no leaky tractors in there...not counting oil and hydraulic fluid. The M has never leaked and never gets the gas shut off but that old 2N drips constantly...that and the fact that it is about the most useless tractor I own get it a nice shady spot way out back. I was looking at this TD-6 I bought in a moment of madness and stopped counting fuel lines when I got to 12....lord what a nightmare THAT one is going to be! If I learned anything the past couple weeks it is to tighten these fittings carefully by hand and then snug them in with a wrench. If they drip, tighten a little more. Seems like if you have to go Kong on the thing it is probably too broke to save anyway.

Dave the best news is that there is a packing nut on the shutoff. It should be just tight enough to allow turning the valve off and on with pretty good finger pressure.
The valve must be shut off between uses of the tractor. Even a half hour or less should have the valve shut off. If you ask every owner of a gravity feed fuel system they will tell you that their valve handles are polished from use. The leaking of fuel into a garage, and the filling of engines with fuel from leaky needle and seats causes serious problems and fires. It is a MUST do. JimN

Jim, I have a couple that only leak when you turn them off at the tank. As long as they are left on they never leak a drop.
