Farmall B - gas line

That worked out pretty nice! First attempt I made a beautiful replica of my gas line....then realized I had NOT put the flare fitting on first so that one is on the shelf waiting for the day when I need a line with two compression fittings. I probably should not admit to these stupid mistakes but it teaches y'all to speak S-L-O-W-L-Y when instructing me 'cause I can be a halfwit about some of the most simple things. Anyhow, when I came in attempt #2 was NOT leaking anywhere and really looks nice with the new sediment bowl and pretty re-done carb. How did the carb work out??? Well, I dunno 'cause the fool battery went dead on me again. I didn't think to charge it last night since the ground has been disconnected since it last ran. I suspect this battery is on her last legs. Anyhow, tomorrow I fire her up and see how well I did on the carb. The throttle screw is backed off per the manual 1.5 turns and the idle screw is backed off one full turn. There is no main jet adjustment on this carb, just a plug that covers the jet. Tractor ran really good before I took the carb off but would not idle and the idle adjustment had no effect. Any tips before I proceed would be appreciated. Is the plumbing part just about done because I stink at it?

I would like to think my plumbing nightmares are history...and I THINK they are BUT....what is the magic with brake line flare fittings. I went back out and this connection is dripping. I have tightened but still drips. This is just a standard flared brake line going into a second fitting which goes into the sediment bowl. Options at this point are: (1) Tighten some more or (2) teflon up the threads. It is a slowish drip but enough to drain a tank in a few days.
My prior nemesis, the compression fitting, is holding just fine and dandy at the carb. Not sure what to think on the battery. It tested fine at the battery place a couple of weeks ago. So what do I do to get rid of the drips?

Dave. The only place a flare fitting seals is between the open end of the flare, and the bevel of the fitting it goes into. The remainder of the fitting is to apply uniform pressure to this flare. Those parts do not seal anything and putting material on them is a waste of time. Pull the flare out of the fitting and use a hand magnifying lense to look at the inside surface of the flare, and the beveled surface in the fitting for ridges or small defects. Polish these out if found, the flare should compress from the force of the fitting. Thus there should be about 45 to 50 pounds of force on a 7 inch "line" wrench (a line wrench looks like a thick box end with the end cut out of it to allow it to go on the line) JimN

Did you start that inverted flare nut by hand and
tighten it by hand before putting a wrench on it?
If you did I would wrap the threads on that inverted flare nut with some teflon tape. keep the tape away from the starting threads. I hope you didn't cross-thread it. Hal
PS: I used have used Gasoila "SoftSet" on natural
gas lines and it would probably work on your leak.
Its available at most plumbing supply stores.

Me?? Cross-thread a fitting???

OK...so it's been known to happen but not this time. WAY careful this time. Just needs some sealant I bet. I'll look around and see what I can find here. Plumbing supply is all closed up until Tuesday.

It's very easy to do on inverted flared fittings.

I'd say you're deserving of a cold beverage of your choice. Pop top, draw up a chair alongside tractor, prop feet up on overturned five-gallon pail, relax and admire your handiwork! If there's anybody around who might bring you a small plate of sliced pepper jack and crackers, your life, if it were mine, would be very near complete.

I've got some thoughts on the not idling issue, but they may be totally irrelevant. We'll wait to see how tomorrow goes!

I got a better idea. I'll get a cold one and you FedEx me a lobster. Nice BIG one. Saw something about a town in Maine that had a lobster festival each year. Two years ago I tried to arrange to take the family there. You would not believe what you would have to go through to travel to that town. Take a plane to Boston, take the Amtrak to Bangor, take the bus to someplace 50 miles from nowhere and hitchhike the rest of the way. Ever been there? You are from Maine, right?
Sounds like a good time but they sure make it tough to visit!

Ayup! The Lobster Festival is in Rockland, about 35 miles from me, about three four weeks ago. I took my BN down to the Antique Truck and Tractor Show at the Owl's Head (next town past there from here) Transporation Museum just the week before. If you ever have any more thoughts about doing that lemme know. Best bet is to fly to Boston or Portland and rent a car from there. Maine's transportaion infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired. Some folks like that, some don't. ;8^)

Wonderin' if that fuel bowl really does need a flare fitting, or the straight compression fitting like the other end. If you do take it apart to look, the inside (sediment bowl end) of a flare fitting will look like a hollow bullet nosed nipple. Pretty pronounced dome to it. If that's not what you see, it may be a straight compression fitting would be what's called for, just like the original. If it does appear to be a flae on the inside, youmight try bowing your line a little bit to make sure you've got a straight run into the bowl end of the fitting, before tightening it down. I never tried Teflon on a fuel fitting. I hit the ends of my fuel lines with a sufficient but not too generous dab of white, gas-proof Permatex pipe dope. Works real well, but only on the original style male fittings. Not real effective (Teflon OR dope) on a flare fitting. In any event be careful running it, and for the first little while watch especially closely for any sign of that leak opeing back up.

You get this baby runnin' right I might just ship ya a couple of lobsters (the smaller ones are more tender and tasty!).

I shoulda said that I hit the THREADS of my fuel line fittings with a touch of pipe dope. Reading back over, it read back like I was suggesting you dope the end of the line itself. NOT.

Sorry 'bout that.

OK....NOW I am motivated!

Back at it in the AM, back to the fair in the PM. Still have a few on exhibit that need to come home. This leak is really light. I think some type of sealant will put a stop to it.

I am very encouraged that this is behind you. The interesting thing is that you will be a stronger Man for it. Meeting all plumbing nightmares with confidence! Experience teaches. If a battery goes dead while not connected, it is toast. JimN
