There is a hose port that has been added to the back of the top of the air cleaner tube. There is no hose attached to it, and I don't see where it could have gone. It looks like it's been welded into place, so I'm assuming it was a shade-tree addition.

Anyone have an idea for what purpose it was installed?

That other end of that line goes into the valve cover. It is a air breather for the valve cover.

Andy.

There is a hose that runs from there to the back of the cyl head. Then there is a tube that connects from one end of the head to the other under the valve cover, then another tube that connects to the top of the govenor housing. Its a breather line for the crankcase. It was missing from my H as well.

Yes,you should invest in some manuals. For the time being, you can go to the Case IH site and use the parts look up,and look up parts for your tractor.

I did that, but it doesn't show a tube. Just a hole. Which is why I asked.

In the parts manual it shows a hole. Nothing there, and nothing coming out. Where on the head should I look for the other end?

Should connect to breather pipe on rear eand of engine block, should then connect back of block via a pipe inside tappet cover to front of block then via pipe from front of block to vent on top of govenor housing.

Attaches to the head -- you need a parts manual. Forerunner to the PCV valve.

Where did this tractor come from? From a more northernly climate? The only thing I could guess is that it is a ether injection port. Maybe they had a tube going back to the operator platform and it would be easier to start the thing with ether as you cranked the moter. My Dads 4020 and 3020 has a factory port under the steering wheel for this. However, this only a guess.
