Are the power steering pumps on these tractors hard to get at or replace. I am assuming ours is shot, because they cut the line to it, and returned it back into the hydraulic system.

Go to oldoakfarmalls.com/Hydraulics. There is an extensive article about 560 hydraulics ( 460 is the same ). although you didn't specify, I assume that you have a Farmall( mine is an international(utility model)) and the site will be specific to your tractor. On my International the clutch pedal was in the way, otherwise it was an easy job. The Power steering pump is mounted on the same plate as the hydraulic pump and the whole thing slides out like a file drawer, and goes back the same way. The pump intake slides onto a suction pipe and then all that remains is to slide it completely back in and replace the bolts, new hydraulic fluid, and filter and you're good to go.

I guess I maybe asked the wrong question, the lines run out of the hydraulics and are capped and returned about a foot from the front tires (narrow front end). They appear to be not attached to some kind of pump or something above the front tires and below the engine. Any idea on this part?

pondman; I don't know what those lines are, but they are not for steering. On 460 tractors the steering unit resides beneath the fuel tank, and is either a mechanical strongarm device or a power assisted unit which has a hydraulic motor inserted into the steering column. On my 460 ute the steering arms come off the steering unit and go forward to the front axles. these arms are about three feet long and push and pull the tie rods directly. If you have power steering on your tractor and its not working it will be almost impossible to steer the tractor, so if your unit has power steering and its steering the tractor with only a little effort then the lines going under the engine are not involved with the steering. My tractor is not close to me, or I would go take a look to see if I have the same lines, and what they go to. Offhand I can,t think of any lines going to the area you describe, but I'll take a look and see what I can find. My operator manual is for the International model only and the parts book doesn't have any views of the tractor side that gives much info. It may not be today, but I'll go take a look at my tractor and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the info, I can steer it somewhat easily, but not with one finger like a car. The tractor should be similar. It is a 159 McCormick Farmall 460 diesel. I will take a better look at the area tomarrow or Tuesday when the tractor is near by. I can't find the manual since it got misplaced in the move. It can deffinatley be steered withoutto much effort. My biggest problem is this clutch. Do you know if these diesels are hard to get started. I am on the glow plugs for quite a while on a 50-60 degree morning.

Thanks Gary

The PS pump is mounted on the hydraulic pump. Filter is below brake pedals on lower right side. Drain fluid and remove plate. Pump is on lower left side attached to the cover plate. Not hard to remove.
