Farmall 140 Starter Switch Problem.....?

I have a 1968 140 Farmall with a push button starter switch. Replaced the switch several times in the last year (3 times) with a heavy switch that looks like the old dimmer switchs that mount in the floor of a car. Yeasterday went to crank it and the switch did not work again. Each one in the past have burnt the contacts. Am I doing something wrong? I would think that they should last a lot longer than they have. I have it wired breaking the positive battery cable then to the starter. The ignition wiring is on a key switch. I have considered maybe putting a solenoid on it to see if things last a little longer. Thanks for any help, and advise!

Keith

Andy,

I have a 1968 as well and went thru two of the push button switches this year.

I ordered the first one fron this site but they are longer than the ones used on a 140, they are for an H or M. It lasted a couple of months then I bought one from the local parts place that was the short kind like it was suppose to be. So far that one has lasted, its been three months now.

I guess yours is 12 volt, neg ground, with a Generator?

All our trouble started with a bad battery and leaving the charger on over night. Get a good battery and have the starter checked like old and Jan suggested.

Keith: Why don't you just go back to the factory starter switch, as used on SA, 100, 130 and early 140. When the 140 was changed it went to key start with a solinoid. My Blue Ribbon Srevice manual is packed away or I could give you the exact serial number of change over. It happened in the first half of the 70s, so clearly your 1968 model would have used one of those proven switches used from 1947 until early 70s. I bought one from CaseIH just last week for my Farmall 130, $22.81.

Those switches last a long time. The one I replaced on the 130 was the original. I know my SA and 140 are only on the second switch each.

I agree with Old
It also seems that you have the system negative ground, which works with an alternator, or a gen polarized to be Neg ground. Starter draw with a cheap meter that is held against the bat cable should be less than 300 amps for that tractor if more, rebuild the starter. JimN

Starter is probably weak and if so draws to many amps and thats what is fring your starter switches

Thanks for all the information! Hugh I have thought about doing just what you said. The only thing is that I do not have the arm that goes to the starter, course thats just a lame excuse I could easily fabricate one.
SuperA I have been thru the same One from here onr from the parts store (not one of the chain so called parts stores)The last one lasted about 3 months.
The tractor is negative ground 12 volt as stated. I noticed today that the jumper cables that I was using from the positive terminal to the starter to crank it was very hot. So hot that it burned when I removed from the battery terminal. Would that indicate that the starter is drawing excessive amps? What do I need to rebuild the starter. I have only changed the bendix on a starter.
Thanks Again!
Keith

The starter button should be mounted on the instrument panel and not on the starter like on a SA. Basicly the same tho just mounted in a differant spot.

Take the starter off and take it to an Alternator place and have them check the starter out.

While its out clean up all the connections. Might even get a new battery cable if the old one is wore out.
