When the switch is pushed in, it "diesels", (that's what I've heard it called) meaning it sputters and you need to let the clutch out with it in gear to basically stall it. It starts right back up though. I would think its a timing issue. Does it need advanced or retarded? Could it be either? Haven't messed with it much, just thought I'd ask you guys first.

That question is asked often. The simplest way to prevent run-on is simply to close the choke.

Respectfully, I agree it sure stops the engine, But the flooding of a hot engine with raw gasoline is both hard on the walls, and washes fuel into the crankcase. It just does not seem better than the above remedies. JimN

I agree. And typically a engine that continues to run is running hot on the spark causing the plug to continue glowing (dieseling like glow plug) which forces it to continue running. Choking it wont fix the real problem. If it is running the plugs to hot, it can cause serious damage to the engine like hole in piston, metal in cylinder wall (like melted plug tip) etc etc.

A hot plug can be from over advanced timing. It can also be from wrong temp plug that is too high temp spark rating. Also make SURE to set the spark plug gap to spec, and use manufacturers recomended plug to ensure correct temp. Set the timing for sure. I would check the points too while your at it. A super lean engine I think could cause it. But everytime Ive seen this its been related to spark one way or another.

There is no relationship between timing (unless it is so far out that the tractor is badly overheated) and run on. The ignition is shut off when the button is in, thus no effect.
I agree with Old on most (except carb cleaner should not be sprayed into a running engine, the combustion makes the fumes highly toxic, a friend near died)
Setting the Idle as slow as it will run reliably and not stall, and just as lean as can be set with good running will also assist shutdown. If it has above 150psi compression, premium fuel, or a 50/50 blend of reg and 92 will also cure part of it. JimN

A lot of times thats caused by hot spots in the engine from carbon build up. What happens is the carbon stays hot and when you shut it off the carbon keeps the incomeing gas burning. Some ways to help fix that is run some MMO or tranny fluid in the gas, and or with a spray bottle spray water into the air intake of the carb with it running. Don't spray so much water in that it dies but just enough that it stubbles a tad. Also srapy carb cleaner works to do the same thing

Late timing can cause dieseling if the throttle plate is held open farther than normal to compensate for the slow idle caused by late timing even though the switch is off.

Good answer, well thought. Exceptions also include a vacuum leak. and sucking autotrans fluid into the intake through a bad diaphragm (not on a letter series though) JimN
