Belly mower belt problems

I recently got a C Farmall with a belly mower. The drive belt broke after mowing about 100 yards. The belt was old and ragged. I have trouble keeping the new one on, but it may stay on if I get all the twists right. However, it gets hot just sitting in the shed running. Nothing seems to be binding, but the drive pulley also gets hot.The drive belt idlers are all home made and none of them line up with the other pulleys. The drive pulley also has a wobble in it. Should the belt and drive pulley be getting hot (too hot to touch) and will the mis-alignment cause heating?
Thanks,
Charles

In general you have analized the issues your self. Alignment of drive belts is important, but not to the 1/8". Tension should be such that the belt can be pushed in with your thumb about one inch per two feet of belt with fair pressure you would not like to keep up for two minutes. Another factor of belt flip is the belt series including depth of the belt section from inside to out, and the angle of the sidewalls, Just having the correct length is less than 1/2 the battle. look carefully at the belt sidewalls for wear at the wrong angle, and compare the angle with the original belt. Make sure all pulleys are free to turn without resistance, and not dented. Wobble in the area of 1/8" is usually no issue if it is an axieal wobble, and not radial (like a tire that would make a vehicle go up and down) It should get warm, but not hot. JimN

It is very important to have the belt lined up on the pulleys correct. What type of mower do you have. If its a woods i have the mounts for one that drives off the belt pulley. I sold the tractor and the new owner doesent want the mower as he is going to restore the SC for his wife to ride in parades ect.

Thanks:
The mower does not have any name on it, but the guy I bought it from said it was a Bolens. It has lots of welding on it.
