Farmall H sputters when I accelerate?

I tried to adjust the carb on my Farmall H and am not having too much luck. I set the throttle to high idle, screwed in the main adjusting screw until the engine started to run rough, then backed it out 1/2 turn. I set the low sped air screw 1 1/2 turn out. I tried the tractor with the low speed screw in some, out some and the tractor still sputters when I pull the throttle. I have had this carb apart many times trying to get the needle valve to stop leaking and think I may have solved that problem. I clean and blow out all passages so I think the carb is clean inside. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Run a points file through the points. If it helps, change them. I have spent so many hours chasing 'fuel problems', the first thing I check now is the points.

Have out ruled the ignition system, the last thing you want to mess with is the carb. ( in most situations) Rusty is right 3 turns out from seat on carb. First off check the cap and rotor on distributor are they defective?, points and condenser dirty burnt? wires? are they the solid core wires? hot wire to coil and distributor good connectoins? kill switch good operation. How long has this condition been going on after messing with carb, is air cleaner clean, clean oil at right level breather screen clean? Check these things and keep us posted if you haven't figured it out. good luck

That bottom screw is supposed to be turned 3 full turns out from the seated position. Put it there and leave it alone.

OPEN the idle screw for the maxuum RPMs.FORGET the 1 !/2.Is the throttle plate put in correctly? As it can be put in four ways and three of them are wrong. Many throttle plates are chamfered so as to meter the fuel during the transfer between the idle and high speed circuits. CENTAUR

Sputtering on acceleration generally points to a lean condition on the high-speed needle in my experience.

Try turning the high-speed screw (bottom one) out 1/2 turn at a time and see what happens. As long as you don"t have black smoke or fouling plugs your aren"t too rich.

How about sputtering and dying when I start it?
Black smoke. Backed out lower screw about 3 turns.
Idle screw I am not sure what I did.

This tractor has given me grief for most of the Winter. I finally got it to start after doing a zillion things to it including all new ignition parts, coil, battery cables and batters. Also put on rubber fuel line with in line filter. I took off carb and cleaed it with solvent.

I did notice that the long needle valve in there is broken in half;..actually sheared in half, but I doubt that is causing this problem.

Any suggestions. I am really desparate with this tractor already..its an H.

The long needle valve is broken in half? Are you talking about the main metering stem? If so, THAT is a serious problem.

I guess I am going to have to open up my shop and offer discount carb rebuilding just to help you guys out.
