How do I know that I have a bad head gasket? I have the head off the tractor and the old gasket in my hand. What do I look for?

If it's bad, you'll see it. :>)

You can reuse those gaskets sometimes. Is it is metal on both sides? Paint it with aluminum paint and wait for it to dry enough that the hair on the back of your hand don't stick to it and put it on and torque the head down. Those gaskets are over 150.00 bucks. Why did you take it off? If you had water in the oil it likely is bad or something is cracked.

If you have removed the head gasket, you MUST replace it, you cannot re-use a head gasket. Get one from a parts store or the IH dealer.

You will not get much arguement about never reusing a head gasket being the best course to follow, but many of us have reused them with no problems. One reason to be carefull how you take this old iron apart is you never know when you may have to reuse something.

I have even gone so far as to take two blown out gaskets and use the best part of each to splice together to make a usable gasket. That was on a Wisconsin V4 on a pea combine. That engine ran 18 hours a day for more than a week before it was replaced with a new one.
