I have an I-4 as well, mine has the heavy duty front end, but regular breaks. I entered it in a local tractor pull (the thing is a porker, weighed in at 4660 with only me on it) and it did decent, I kept up with my friends oliver 77 diesal in 4500, 5000, and 5500 lb class. A lot of the parts will interchange from the H's, and as to starters the one I put on mine is from an M. Even one from a model A or C will work, just the switch will be upside down. They are a good tractor, I use mine mostly here on the farm. Good luck with yours.

I am trying to post a pic of it, but here is a link if it doesn't show.

curious as to what options yours has.
P.T.O?
Lights?
Belt Pulley?
Is it a Gasoline model?
If not does it still have the starter gasoline tank?

IF you could post a Pic that would be cool as we don't get many I-4 pics here or in the photo Gallery.

I just got the engine on mine unstuck. Soaked it for 3 years, but I procrastinate

Here's you an I-4 of a different color.... Highway Orange.

I have it apart right now overhauling the engine.

I wish I could remember how to post the pic.

L. C.

I am also painting my I-4 Highway Orange, as that was a no cost optional color from the factory. I have found that Allis Chalmers orange is a very close modern color match to the old Harvester Highway Orange.

Dennis,

Post a picture of your 3 point hitch when you get it working on your I-4. Not many owners have rigged a 3 point hitch on the W-O-I models.

another thing on my 3point i had to cut the steering shaft off at the box and install a orbital for steering.so the steering wheel sits higher now.plus ihad to make the seat higher too.so the 3 point arms dont hit the seat.i also had to heat the shifter and bend it a little.i love the way it drives now.cool.thanks

i will tell you a little about putting a 3point on a tractor this narrow.the first problem is i have to get on the rear not the front like most tractors.i made every thing but the bottom bars i bought them new at orchilens,in dodge city.i used 3 inch thick walled pipe then i found a pipe that fits tight.it was only 14 inches wide.then i used 3x4 tubing for the arms.i used 3x8inch cylinders, standing upright.about3/4 way back on the arms.i got it done today,it has 24inches of lift,i dont know if that is right or not.it works better than i wanted it to.i will post a picture when i figure out how.thanks

installation is a bit tricky as there are some bolts that interfere with each other. I remember mine being kinda quirky to remove.

The engines and transmissions are basically the same except for the faster gears in the I-4. The frame on an H is a whats called frame rail, and the I-4 is sometimes called tub frame. Your starter will work fine.

Dennis, I have an I-4 and I don't understand your question about the starter? You are correct in that it is a close cousin of the 4 series tractors and the H; all those starters should interchange. I have another of Guy Fay's excellent books but I think Andy was referring to Guy's IH tractor data book, it can be purchased though our hosts here at YTmag:

The starter should bolt right up. THe engine is the same as an H, W4, OS4. 152 cu.in. engines. Should be around 25 hp. Yours is a 1947. Does yours have the heavy front axle, pintle hitch and hyd. Brakes? If it does it would be considered a "Heavy Duty" I4. They only made 6426 I4's according to Guy Fays Data book. You may want to get one sometime, its got some great info. in it. good luck, Andy

Allow me to add some more about the I-4 until one of the many more knowledgeable IH guys comes along. As you suspected, it shares much in common with the H, it is considered the industrial version and saw duty in the military, warehouses, industrial plants, airfields, etc. It has the same engine(C152)and basically the same transmission as the H. Although oddly, the shift pattern was changed. I don't have my old I-4 parts manual with me to explain the exact reason but I recall it had something to do with making it easier to use in close quarters where their was a lot of forward and reverse movement. I'll look it up Thursday and let you know. To also make shifting easier, it incorporated a clever braking system that would stop the transmission shaft from spinning when the clutch pedal was depressed. It also should have an accelerator pedal and even hydraulic brakes were available as an option. Mine has a Wagner loader that is powered by a hydraulic pump mounted on the front of the cast frame. It is driven by a linkage on the front of the crankshaft. It features that same cast front frame "tub" that can be found on the 0-4's and I believe the W's also (until they went to steel frame rails later). It allows you to replace the clutch from above without splitting the tractor but it does preclude having the ubiquitous hydraulic belly pump found on so many H models. I really like mine, as Andy said there aren't that many of them but because it can use many H parts, that is a plus. Enjoy
