HI My 53 super ring gear teeth are at least half gonefrom starter side toward front of tractor.
Starter looks like it already has the new clutch bendix and it is torn up also. Teeth are messed up for probably 2-3 inches. thanks

Rob the I&T number IH-8 is a pretty good manual. They are available here, or at TSC stores and maybe Binder books.

I just wanted Hugh to see this message. plied to my questions yesterday and thought perhaps I could fix it temporarily. You both have confirmed what I thought but was not sure. Is it a big job to split an A? I supose need to be ready with a new clutch also. Would the pressure plate need to be replaced also or do they hold up well? Thanks for the replies Rob Baird

Rob: George didn't mention the pilot bushing, very small item, but have caused another split if ignored.

Hard to remember everything. This heat has about cooked my skull. It wasn't the best to start with.

George: Great part about this forum, two or more minds better than one. We all miss items from time to time. I for example couldn't imagine a ring gear being that bad, it must have chewed up a lot of starter drives, and those soon run into the cost of a ring gear change.

Heat hasn't been so bad here lately, but humidity was a killer yesterday. Ah, but we had an electrical storm last evening and have have nice little northerly breeze here this morning.

Hugh, you are exactly right about that. Sometimes I am just flat out wrong and need correcting.

Rob, if money is no big problem I would put the pressure plate and new throwout bearing in it too. I would inspect the one you take out first though as it may not be worn out at all. It is not to big a job to do this. Your manual will explain the splitting procedures. To remove the old ring gear just heat with a torch and it will come right off. Then heat the new one and it will go right on and seat as it cools off. You may have to knock the old one off with a ham,mer after heating.

Rob: I can see it, however if it is as you describe, you best buy a ring gear, and split the tractor.

Rob, there is nothing Hugh can do for you, unless he drives down and puts a new ring gear in your tractor. That is the only right way to fix it. You have no choice except to split that tractor and replace the ring gear, then you will have no more trouble out of and will not keep eating starters. It is that or crank it to start it.

George: Your right, Rob and I discussed this last evening, my 130 ring gear is not great, a bendix will no start the tractor, however the clutch type starter drive will, and has been for years. Now, bear in mind mine does have all the teeth on the ring gear.

Rob is now saying he has teeth completely missing. In my wildest imagination, I couldn't believe anyone would put up with a ring gear that long.

Hi, Putting up with things? When I was a kid my dad had a MM KTA, they had the crank hang on the front, except ours came lose and was plowed under. The next 4 or 5 years we started it by wrapping a rope around the pulley, I might have weighted 85 pounds then so I would stand up on the wide front and take a flying leap off with the rope. If it didn't want to start we would take a longer rope, tie it to the pickup bumper and floor it. I can't remember it not starting then. After about 5 years we plowed the crank back up, actually the rope didn't work that bad. Good luck with your move, Chuck

Well Hugh, I am guilty as charged. My SC has a bad one in it for a long time. I have been putting it off for 3 years. I have had something else in the shop whenever I have had time to fool with. I just slip that old crank into it and give her a half a turn and away we go. I may get to it this winter.

George, I've been starting my H that way for several years now. I go ahead and turn it a little as soon as I shut it down.
Good luck, Wm

williamf, I do mine that way sometimes. Turn it just a little with the crank to move the bad spot and the starter will work. I have a whole flywheel with a good ring on it laying right here in the shop, just haven't put it in yet. I use the little tractor so much, I hate to tear it apart as I am kinda slow to get things back together. I use it more than any other tractor here. It mows most the hay, does all the cultivating and raking. Even do a lot of pasture clipping with it. Got some wet bottom land and I put duals on it and mow with an 8 foot Lilliston mower. It doesn't sink like the bigger tractor do. Then use it all winter to haul wood with. It don't use near the fuel on lots of jobs the bigger ones do. I see folks around here pulling a hay rake with 100 HP tractors. Looks funny with a big tractor in front of a rake.

I can't believe anyone lived with it like this either. It did start a few times then I could not
get it to catch. I took thr front bumper off and now I can hand start it. That will work for now.
I need to start collecting pieces . Thanks Rob
