SA Tie Rod

The inner ends on my tie rods had been welded, looks like some kind of field repair.

OEM has the inner end and tube that they say is correct for a SA. Their tube is 17 inches long but I measured the old tube on mine and it is 13 inches. Since mines been welded it hard to tell what it might have been to start with.

I then measured the ones on out 140's and the tube is 16 inches long.

The outer ends on mine are differant from the inner ends so I will re-use them. The outer ends are like on a cub if that makes any differance.

Can someone tell me the total length of the tube on their SA tie rod or what is the correct length. I am thinking I may have to cut the new ones down to make them work right.

Rob,

Yours are like on our 140's and after they changed around 1951 (according to Hugh's post).

Guess I need the length of the old style 1948 thru 1950 before they changed the outer end.

If nothing else I can wait until the parts come in and then just match it to the old length on my old tie rod and cut off what I dont need.

I guess the tie rods are hollow the entire length?

Randy: It is not very easy to change from the old type tyrods to the new type. You have to change control arms at spindles. At the steering box the steering control arm is different at both ends, thus you must change the entire vertical shaft plus the gear within the steering box.

Randy: That whole tyrod system changed about 1951, I have the exact serial number, however it's packed away. (around 310000) All A and Super A before that have the old tyrods, From that time onward in SA and into 100, 130 and 140 they all have automotive type tyrods. At some point IH also increased the shaft size of the automotive type, probably 1954.

Hugh,

Yea, mine is the old type, a 1948 model.

I guess when they changed they made the inner tube longer so I may have to do some cutting and grinding to get the ones I ordered to work.

The tube is 1" outside diameter and our 140's are the same diameter (1968 and 1976). The do have the automotive ends.
