Cub, low oil pressure

The Cub I recently purchased does not have much oil pressure, as in the needle on the gage barely moves. The engine was overhauled in 2006 and it has hardly been run since then. The engine runs great, no smoke, no noise, good power etc. I wonder if the problem could be the oil pressure relief valve. Any problems to just take that plug that is just under the distributor drive and check the valve spring and components. I've checked the gauge and although old, it does register properly with air pressure. Oil is getting to the gage hole, but it drains away almost immediately on shut down.

There is another main oil gallery plug (allen headed screw) under the valve cover. Almost dead center. Once in a great while this one gets left out. Check this one out first. It's an easy replacement if missing.

I think there is another on the rear of the engine plugging the main oil gallery. However, if this one is missing you would have large quantities of oil draining out the bellhousing. The others drain oil back into the oil pan.

Sorry Haas you will have to remove the crank pully and front of the engine. Remove all the valve springs and carefully pull the cam forward. the oil gally plug is under the cam gear.I just finshed one 2 weeks ago same story. Rebuilder forgot to replace the oil gally plug

I was afraid that the front engine cover would have to be pulled to check out the oil plug. I've done that job on another cub I have just to replace the front cover which was broken. So I know how to get the crank pulley off, etc. I have not done any valve work before however. Thanks for the info. I have managed to get I think around 10 lbs of pressure after I fiddled with the relief valve. Spring seems a little short, so I am going to get a new one and a new relief valve and also a pressure gauge I can trust. Also I'm going to change the oil to make sure that 30 wt oil is in there. I think it may be multivis. I'll do all I can before diving into the front cover thing. I know who did the rebuild, so if changing the oil and a new relief valve don't solve it, I'm going to give him a call.

No particular problem in removing the PRV spring and valve. The spring is rated at 9 1/2 lbs @ 2 15/32 inches.

Check for missing allen head screws in the oil gallery. Usually the rebuilder forgot to put in the one under the cam timing gear.
