I took the head and rods from my '54 SH to my local machinist last September. I told him I wasn't in a huge hurry for it. It should be done this week, emphasis on should. Oh well, patience is a virtue, right?

What I would say is that I am not in any hurry. Will it be ready the first of next week??

In the late 60s early 70s I worked in a machine shop. At times we were swamped with too much work. I had a block come in at the begining of the week that needed boring. On Friday the customer came in looking for it. I said I just didn't get time to do it yet. He said then I will have to take it elseware as I need it soon. I said for you I will drop every thing and it will be ready this afternoon, which it was. He never forgot that and after he retired from business I had a repair shop of my own and he brought his business to me along with referring others.

Yep, when ya think about it, probably 95 out of 100 people who carry something into those shops are running a business themselves and just farming out the machine work(replace with paint work, body work, whatever) and those 95 out of 100 all say they need it done "yesterday". So when someone moseys in and says "no hurry" that's exactly what they'll get. Best bet is to approach these shops like any other paying customer where you're at that place of business because you NEED that thing done so you can get on with your business at hand.

Of course that only applies if you're gonna plan to pay the same prices the rest of 'em pay. If you're on a "buddy deal" where you're gonna get a discount or do some kinda trade for the labor, the above does not apply!

I took a SC block to a shop owned by a cousin of mine 3 weeks ago and told him I needed it back fairly soon as I have it sold to another member of this forum and he still hasn't got to it. I am thinking of going after it and taking it somewhere else, but afraid it will be farther down the list. I guess it don't matter if it is family or stramgers.

I made the same mistake.

Waiting a year on a trailer because I told him I wasnt in a big hurry.

Learned a lesson,...dont tell someone your not in a hurry.
