Amp meter showing discharge

When I pull the switch the amp meter goes to the left at the 11 o'clock position, when I try to start it the needle goes to the 10 o'clock position. I have to boost it off or pull it off to start. After it starts the needle shows a slight lean to the discharge side.

Is my battery gone? I am not very good with electrical stuff, any help would be appreciated.

BTW, this is on a 1959 Cub Lo-Boy, 6-volt.

Might battery. Might be hooked up wrong. All 6 volt systems were positive ground. This would make the amp gauge work backwards

The ammeter is telling you the generator is not charging the battery. (If it WAS charging the ammeter hand would move to the right of center when the engine's running faster than low idle.) Consequently your battery is slowly being drained as you use the tractor.

There's several possible causes for the "no charge" problem. Assuming you have the stock generator/regulator system, work thru the flow chart at the link below. It should help you isolate the problem.
