we have an M that idles way to fast. it has an M&W power gov. in it which has 2 springs instead of one. we tried to set the idle on the carb but it don't help. do you guys think that extra spring is effecting the idle? we have tried everything but nothing helps. this gov> came off of a stuck engine. do they vairy that much from engine to engine?should we take out the one spring and see if that helps? thanks much

An old IH Mechanic once showed my Dad a trick to check on getting an M or H to idle down. Just loosen the two screws holding the "Tube" between the governor and the carb at the governor end. Using a big screw driver, gently lift up the governor end of the tube. If the tractor idles down, it indicates wear in the tower of the governor where the clevis attaches to the rod coming up from the adjustment assembly. Sometimes, you can readjust to compensate for this wear, sometimes you can't and have to replace the parts.

As Geo. says in the manual it takes them 2 or 3 pages to explain how to adjust the gov. so it would be hard to explain on here but thats probably the problem and you need to adjust the gov.

Rich, I have both my M's so slow you can't even hardly hear them running. I don't see how anything can run that slow.

If nothing is binding, I would think the governor needs adjusting. You need a manual for these procedures as it is hard to explain all that for a guy who barely can type.

I would check to see if the linkage is bound up and that the throttle plate is actually closing. If both of those check out, you might have an air leak after the throttle plate.
