Anyone here got a tip on tightening the water pump packing nut on a M. Mine is leaking a bit and need to get in there and tighten it a little. I cannot see how to unless I pull the pump off.

Thanks!!

I just went through that nightmare. I've done several H's, but not an M. I actually had to replace the shiev (sp) that had previously broke off in two pieces. That "Gland Nut" as IH calls it can be a real bear if it's been bottomed out. I went to every extent to remove ths bugger with what I had in my toolbox including an oversized Channelock pliers...NO Go.(I was going in between the radiator and shroud for a straighter shot at it) I was rounding off the Gland nut something awful. I decided to stop and call a 40-50 year IH shop where I frequently buy parts for all my tractors. I thought there must be some kind of "secret" involved. I called up the IH shop and described my issue and asked for any "secret" they might have to resolve this problem. They said "Yeah, we got a "secret"...it's called a pipewrench, and if it's bottomed out and stuck bad enough, you'll need a pipe on the end of that pipewrench. Well...that's all I needed to hear. I took three different pipewrenches out to he site, and sure enough...the third pipewrench found the "sweetspot" AND I had a pipe on the end of that wrench, I finally got it to crack loose a little. It took me twenty to twenty five minutes to get that little bugger the rest of the way out. The Gland Nut was really carved up bad. I have a good used Gland nut coming from the IH place I called. Boy...Talk about extremes. Good luck to you.

Use a pair of "WATER PUMP" pliers. They usualy work pretty well.

Chris is right about tightening the brass "nut" if you have any packing left to "squeeze". I used a 18" aluminum dowel I picked up at the Ace hardware and was able to tap the brass a little tighter clockwise and stop the leak. Using the soft aluminum seemed to not do too much damage to the brass. I always wondered if the old Farmall shops had some kind of special spanner they could reach in with? If you do have to end up replacing the packing, I found a graphite laced rope packing at Ace that worked well in the past. Good Luck.

Brian Don't pull the pump off, it can be done. Need a thin wrench or remove the drive bar and springs to get at the nut. The screw that goes through the bar is tappered so lossen the nut and drive the screw back. Hope this helps.

So it is the large nut? I thought it was the spanner type nut that is smaller and just behind the drive bar?

Sey you are right sorry, but can be done on the tractor. some times can use punch but can be hard on the brass nut. If it has been long time it can be very hard to do. Also the nut could be turned all the way up and need more packing.
