240 Farmall, They put a 12 volt battery on her. I think it was probably 6volt originally. When I took the starter to get it worked on I noticed the fly wheel is pretty well worn down. Is there any way to get a file in there to take the teeth down, and make them a little sharper, or will I have to have it split in half and turn the flywheel around. I heard that works. Is that a stupid Idea? Thanks

If it started fine before, just reuse the existing starter drive after you get the starter back from being rebuilt and just go with it from there. Replace the drive and ring gear as a set when it one or the other goes bad or you are in there replacing the clutch. No sense in throwing money at something that might be AOK for a number of years.

Cole: Yes, I did that very thing on a 1958 140. It took a while but it sure cleaned up the ring gear teeth enough to make things engage smoothly. I also had a new starter drive gear put on the starter at the same time. I went in through the starter hole and as I worked around, I turned the engine with a big screwdriver. The starter engaged fine after that for as long as I owned it....

Whatever you do the tractor will need to be split. The ring gear can be taken off and turned over and put back on. I would just put a new ring gear on while I was in there. Check the cluth good to.

if the starter ya had in there was doing the job with out any problem, then put it back when fixed and don`t worry about it until it becomes a problem. my bn does not "look" real good but works with no problems at all so i just clutched it 3yrs. ago and bolted it back together.

Cole hate to tell you the bad news but I do not think you can turn the flywheel around. You will have to replace it. Mike

Depends on how worn down you mean. If just a little then yes it's possible.

Remove the flywheel inspection cover (behind the oil pan) and you ought to be able to get a file in there. You can also get it through the starter hole once you remove the starter.

Why bother turning it around when new ones are so reasonable. Usually 25-30 dollars.
