I just recieved a farmall 460 diesel, engine runs great, but the tractor will not climb even the slightest of grades, it will even stop when running upon a large stone. Until I get the books, is there a good place to start?

The main clutch or the T/A clutch is slipping and if its the T/A clutch your T/A is out on the low side. Only way a adjustment will help is if there's no free play between releace bearing and clutch plate fingers of either clutch and the fingers are held partly down. Fixing whichever clutch is slipping will make it pull in high T/A, but if the main clutch is not the problem (main clutch holds but tractor still stops when handle is pulled back) the T/A needs repair for low side to pull.

D Slater:

Thank you for the info, I need to get the manuals and really start doing some research. This is all new to me. The tractor goes no where with or without the TA engaged. It gets worse when I pull back the handle on the TA, it whines and stops. Looks like I am in for an interesting time. Thanks again

Clutch/TA problem for sure.

We are not sure if we are needing a full blown clutch replacent or maybe something else. A few people around here seem to think that an ajustment will cure it. I do not know allot about tractors, but I seem to doubt that an adjustment would cure it.

Does the engine slow to a stop or is the clutch slipping to a stop with the engine still running at high speed?

Engine shows no signs of slowing, I fear it may be the clutch. When it does stop, it may sit for a second and then catch and go again, but most of the time, it just feels like it is slipping!

Did you try both sides of the TA lever?

If it slips on both the high and low side of the TA it is most likly your clutch.

I tried both with and without the TA, with it engaged, it does a lot of "wining" and really goes nowhere, and seems to hop a little. I did remove the front most cover and there seems to be a slight bit of oil dripping behind? the clutch. I assume that the clutch is a major undertaking
