Many thanks to they who have helped me so far in my restoration of this A. I am in the final stages and have overcome many problems however; this one has me stumped for three weeks. The throttle arm that goes to the governor seem to be fine, the arm and linkage that go to the carb "surge" and the engine speed is all over the place. If I hold the rod in one postion it will settle down for a moment the go right back to the surging. There is a sweet spot right about half throttle, but when I tr to go to 2/3 throttle it begins surging. I have rebulit the Zenith carb completely, added a fuel filter that is catching some crud from the tank, I have added a light spring to settle it down but I know that not the way it"s designed to work. Help... we need this tractor for upcoming grape hervest. I need the Farmall experts from around the country to solve this.

I was about to post a similar question - as my governor hunts just a hair, enough to create a slight stumble when running. I thought it was a timing miss or electronic skip. But further inspection shows a micro-surge.

Georgeky, how far inward do we dare turn the bumper screw, as I went in far enough to no longer be able to put the castle nut back on - and it did not cure the micro-surge completely?

VNY- I don't intend to hijack your thread, just trying to avoid being too repetitive here.

Red Dave has it covered. It is a trial and error thing as each one can vary a little. If it does not cure it you may have a weak spring in the governor.

If I remember right, there is a spring on the end of that adjustment screw. Yours may be worn or broken if you are that far out of adjustment.

It is not that hard to remove and rebuild/repair the governor, but you must have a repair manual and a parts diagram and you must not remove the gear that drives it from the housing or it will get out of time. Take your time and replace all the springs and anything else that is worn or broken inside. Your Case/IH dealer still can get the parts.

Look on the under side of the governor housing. There is a nut on a stud with a cap on it. Remove the cap if it has it and back off the locking nut, then turn the stud a little and try it again. This is the surge bumper. This can be done while tractor is running, but be very careful about the fan.

The one on top sets the maximum engine RPM's. You want the one on the bottom to stop surging.

Great.... I'll wander out to the shop after dinner and try it. The wife will be all bent but it's her or my new girlfriend (The restored A) tonight.

Thanks for the help
