Hoping for some help from the gang. Went out to my H the other morning (has been converted to 12V)hopped on and it would not start. Absolutely nothing there. The battery is new and it has been starting great lately. I jumped it and drove it to the gas station around the corner and filled it up, as the tank was bone dry. Needed a jump to get it back on the road. The battery had not been charged at all by the alternator. As I was driving toward the field I was going to bush hog, it started running real rough. It would not run at all in road gear. After about 20 minutes, just as I was pulling it into the field, it just shut down. Would not start. Would not turn over. A friend came and jumped it and it would run for a minute or two and start to skip and miss and then shut down. We let it run for a while hooked up to a 12V source and it ran great. No skips, or misses and no shutting down. Given that the battery is new, could it be that the alternator went bad? Any other suggestions? I checked for fuel contamination, but ruled that out. One other thing, the rear light stays on now when I have the front lights on, no matter what position the rear light switch is in. It never did that before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to mow soon.

My H acted the same way, and it turned out to be the fan belt slipping, hence not turning the generator like it should, as the generator drives off the water pump.

I tried a new belt, thinking it might be tighter. It wasn't. Rather than try to adjust the width of the water pump pulley, I fabricated a bracket to run an idler pulley inside the fan belt to tighten it.

Thanks All. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am going to pull the alternator off tonight and have it checked. Hopefully it is something that simple.

Well first off if the battery is dead or very weak the engine will not run well if at all because it needs volts to power the coil and with out the volts to do that it will not run. Now as far as the alternator sounds like you need to pull it off and have it checked and or check out the wiring to make sure a mouse hasn't had lunch out of one of your wires

I think you diagnosed it as the alternator yourself. I would start with it.

Tractor needs juice from somewhere to run.

If your new battery isn't being recharged, I'd suspect something in the charging system.

Allan
