Farmall B - gas line

Frustrating day. Mostly putting out fires and didn't get nearly the time I wanted to work on the tractor as planned. When I did I ran afoul of this gas line again. Did you guys say you used brake line? Are we talking about the stuff that comes in various lengths with the ends flared and the fittings already on it? Saw a display of these and looked at them but was not sure about the fit so I went with the same tubing and compression fittings that came off the tractor. One of the fittings is "thread challenged" (not guilty, your honor) so I need to replace it but, of course, no one has that particular size (not the hardware, auto parts, or plumbing stores anyway). Small hurdle I am sure, but I am headed for town on work tomorrow and could stop just about anyplace you could imagine.
Your suggestions would be appreciated. I just need a tube from the sediment bowl to the carb that won't drip.

If your near an O'Reilly Part Store, they have everything you need. I replaced the fuel line in June on my B and the cost of the 5/16" brake line and 2 ferrells cost less then 5 bucks. That's all, nothing more.

5/16" steel brake line will work just fine.

However, the brass compression fittings for the ends are kind of special (and spendy).

If it is "as original", it will have brass "nuts" with the threads on the OUTSIDE, with the ferrule attached to the nut (as it comes new in the bag.)

Upon installing it, and tightening it for the first time, the ferrule breaks free of the nut, and gets mashed down on the line.

Case Interbinder still has the nuts, I have several new ones at the shop, but don't have the number here "at hand".

Hi Bob! Back from town and you are right, the fittings are specialized and pretty much nobody has anything like them. Time to pull the sediment bowl AND the carb and go sit in the plumbing aisle at the auto parts place until I get it right. If I can't get it I will order one on-line but would prefer not to wait. Brake line probably closest to original for the tubing. This business of not being able to get a fitting is frustrating. The best response I could get at the auto parts stores was that I was clearly mistaken and that the fuel line could not be configured that way.

Hey Dave
you need to watch out who's head you are biting at when they are trying to help you. there are a lot of good guys here that will go a extra step or two if you treat them right. Don't bite the hand that helps you!!

Does ANYBODY have any idea what this person is talking about? The bet to take is that, if it sounds like I am taking off on you....probably a joke you are reading wrong. I stand here with my hat in my hand and I hope that comes through in my posts. Here to learn not to give attitude!

I don't recollect which end of the line has the goobered up threads. Before you go acquiring stuff, be sure where you need them. Is it the brass fittings on the line, or the threads in the sediment bowl or the elbow into the carb that are screwed? (Sorry, couldn't resist it!)

There shouldn't be anything terribly exotic about the line. Steel is the proper material, as copper gets brittle and fails (read "starts fires in bad places" when it ultimately leaks).

You could try, I suppose, asking about steel line for any purpose (not just brake line) just to break your counter guy out of his box, and see if he can find it that way. And the fittings shouldn't be that exotic, either. Nothing non-standard about he thread or the taper at the end.

A good auto parts store and a good counterman are both blessings if you have them.

I'd suggest trying other places. You say you';re going to town. Try some of the older parts stores, and don't be shy about stopping into a diesel shop, either.

That failing, you may need to bite the bullet and buy a new one. I see an ebay connection posted below. If that doeesn't pan out, OEM has the line you need. Comes with fittings.

OK...scratch the copper and bring back the original line. I'll take it all with me tomorrow and try to find someone who can help. I want to try out my carb after all that work with all those little parts.

I just got my super c engine running on the engine stand prior to placing it back into the tractor.

I went to lowes and got some of their fuel line and a brass fitting that would screw into the carb body (not the brass fitting in the carb body) I only did it for a temporary line, but I don't see why it wouldn't work permanently.

Good heavens, Mike! That won't do! It's a tractor not a washing machine...what's with the rubber hose? All kidding aside, I will lose what is left of my sanity if I have to wait over a week for something to be shipped! This is too simple...I am taking the carb with me tomorrow and find someone who can help me out. If I can't find it then I will give in and bid.

Dave, don't give in just yet. I'll have to check my catalogs, but I think an original replacement is available.

Well, heck, Dave. I don't blame you. I was just trying to get you going until you found a traditional solution. I don't have one of those rubber lines on my machines either, but they do work well, I'm told. mike

Brake line works well for fuel line but so does the auto type rubber hose. I do and have used either one or both at times depending on what I needed at the time. I also have one of 2 tractors with copper lines on them and they have been there for years with no problems

Copper lines with flare fittings on the end are what you need. Steel line is good also. Don't ever use copper when near the coastline. Beleive it or not the salt in the air will pit over a period of time. Its my opinionj that rubber fuel lines work good but look just BUTT ugly on an old tractor

The original fittings were NOT flare, and it's NOT a good idea to use copper for a gas line.
