Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the M&W hand clutch used on a '47 M with band brakes. It is slipping and full of grease on the discs, so the seals are leaking. Is there adjustment on this clutch? I tried to tighten the center nut before I took it apart but was already tight. Would convert back to the regular brake without the clutch but I believe the bull gear has to come out etc. to change the bull pinion shaft? Thanks in advance!

M&W clutch can be easily eliminated w/o teardown, just remove cover, and all parts from inside the brake drum, then drill holes through outer clutch plate into 3 spokes of brake drum, i used 7/16" nc tap drill, then tap 7/16" threads into spokes and drill plate hole to 7/16". bolt plate to brake drum, put cover back on & use tractor like a normal M. no costs involved.

Thanks for the answers. Just wondering yet if there is any adjustments on the clutch? When I had everything together yet, there seemed to be no effort in moving the cam with my fingers thru the hole, to lock the discs together. One way or the other seemed about the same.(This tractor has the handle/lever missing) And probably should be on there to lock it in or out? Haven't cleaned up the discs yet, but they may be worn enough that they won't lock toghether. Thanks again

I re-read your post and Neb. Kirk's. The grease is probably 100% of the problem. Follow Kirks suggestions and you will have to have a Handle in order to snap it over center. When properly working and adjusted it will take a firm quick pull to snap it in and out of gear. For baling or mowing it is a god send to have one of these. dont remove it unless you really have to and as you suspect, it is a real job to remove it.

Oh, I forgot, you can probably jury rig a handle from a 3' piece of cold rolled steel threaded to the proper sized threads.

I am familiar with that clutch. I have installed two of them, one on my M and one on my brother's M. I have some parts for them including a few used fiber and steel discs. If there is oil/grease on the discs then it will slip no matter how tight you adjust it. You will have to take the large cover off, remove that center nut and cam assembly and then all of the discs. After all of the discs are removed you can just grab that center splined shaft and pull it straight out, you will then see a seal where the shaft came out of. Also, pull the brake drum off, there is another large seal behind it. Replace those two seals, throughly degrease everything and put it back together. It would not hurt to take the cam assembly apart and check the two ball bearings. Also, take the two halfs of the cam apart, you will see 15 small steel balls riding in shallow groves, clean and regrease them if necessary. Furthermore, there should be a grease zerk on the side of the cam that faces out, this supplies grease to the two ball bearings, the manual specifies that a high temp. grease be used.

If you need more information, feel free to email me.

I did a little research a few months back. I have an M with the hand clutch. My dad put it on in about 1966. I have the owners book/parts list if you need to see it. There is a place in Nebraska that has had a batch of replacement disks made up, but they want $70 each. Needs 3 so your looking at $210 just for the disks. I have their # at my office if you want it. Some of the old tractor parts places might have some NOS ( new old stock) but I didn't check into this. I would bet that taking it apart, fixing the source of the grease/oil problems might cure your problem. I can remember my dad washing the disks with a solvent, drying them, then roughing up each side by rubbing them on the concrete shop floor, then putting it all back together Hope this helps.
