combine engine cylinder

I just started working on the block of the engine and noticed that two of the cylinders have a few small brown spots about the size of a pin tip, which I think may be rust. I had coated the cylinders with oil upon disassembly. You cannot feel them with the skin of your finger, but if you run your fingernail over them, they are just noticeable but they are not large enough to catch (stop) your fingernail. Will the rings clean that up with running (without destroying them), or can I hone the cylinders with the pistons in? Oh, and the person who did the head gasket last definitely used sealant. I have spent 3 hours so far trying to get the black tar scraped off! Thanks.

Just use 320 wet or dry and knock off the tops of the rust. Putting a rag on the piston top will catch grit. Honing makes too much grit. JimN

Do I need to clean all of the oil off of the walls before sanding, or do I just sand with the oil present?

I would use the 320 wet or dry too. The oil coating won't matter. I would clean those cylinder walls and then recoat them with engine oil. Hal

You might get away with them, but you'd feel a lot better about them if a few swipes with a cylinder hone would knock them down.

Just a thought.

Thanks. I think I will give it a try. There is no way to pull the pistons without removing the whole motor carriage (they don't give you room to drop the pan), so I will just do it with the pistons in. I figured it couldn't hurt anything, but just wanted to check.
