H Hand Crank Problem

The hand crank on my 51H will not work because the cylindrical dog that engages the front pully is frozen in the bolster support casting and will not allow itself to be pushed in to engage the pully. Is there some way to get the hand crank assembly apart without tearing down the front of the tractor? Only way I can figure is to take off the radiator and the front bolster and then remove the support casting from the side rails so it can be worked on in the vertical position. Lots of work if there is, in fact, and easier way to loosen the cylindrical dog up.

Suggestions?

I had a 40 H with the same problem, took it all apart and freed it up,put it back together and found out over the years the motor mounts had wore and the crank would not line up with the crank pulley,so I just went back to the starter,Wasted time

Yeah...I'm with Allen on this one! I have a 52 H that had the same problem...and like most of the suggestions I just started with some penetrating oil every couple of days and started knocking on it with a soft-face 4# dead blow hammer. After about two weeks it was as smooth as silk. I use it once in a while just for spite...but again...I'm with Allen on this one!

Good luck!

Think I've got three or four of those old cranks strung across as many farms. Just slung 'em in the corner of the shops when the tractors were bought.

Same way with those silly flat belt pulleys. :>)

Yeah...I bet if I started checking all the corners in the buildings at the farm, I bet I could equip a fleet of about twenty Farmall's with hand cranks!

So ya said you needed a good deal on a flat belt pulley huh Allen? I've got an all metal one off of a Super H and a paper pulley from an M. I'll just send it to ya so you can have another paper weight!

Ha ha ha!

Doug,

Mine was froze like that when I got my H. I just kept spraying penetrant both on the front and, as best I could, on the back side. Let it set for a day or so and keep pecking away at it with a block of wood and a hammer. Took about a week of doing this and it broke free. Once it started to move a little, I put the crank on it and started moving it back and forth. Finally I had it where I could crank the engine. Good luck and hope this helps. Larry

I'd use the starter.

Heat and penetrant and heat with a wt hanging on the crank handle while attached to the crank snout. The wt should be about 100lbs and the crank should be sideways. if the crank is not in a good position, use a pipewrench on the snout to gain that horizontal position for the wt. Then more patience and heat and penetrant. then tapping the end of the snout with a hardwood block and a 2lb hammer then heat and patience. Taking it apart would help spend time, not make it easier. see if you have the mud shield on the underside of the bolster. it is a tin shield that keeps the mud from packing in the bottom of the bolster. if its not there the starting asem is probably packed with years of mud and debris. clean alll the junk out with a scraper, compressed air and then pressure wash it.after its clean, spray it up real good with pb blaster penetrating oil. you will probably need to spray some every day for a few days, keep working the crank, tap it with a rubber mallet, it should loosen up.

I think that if you remove that shield, then the whole thing is accessible from underneath, and I think there is a large cotter pin that can be removed and then the assembly can be removed from the front bolster. 'Course you need to get it freed up first.

There is a zerks fitting some where on the assembly. but I loosened mine with PB Blaster and a pipe wrench and then greased the devil out of it. Come to think of it, I better go out and check it since I havent used it. May be stuck slightly.
