I frequent this forum as well as the green forum, a couple of times each day, I am amazed at the replies a post gets on the I H FORUM, You can post on the green forum and get nowhere, But I am kinda partial to the old red tractors anyway, Just my 2 cents worth,

Give each tractor its due...but I'm partial to the red ones myself. That's not a knock on Deere, but in my experiences on them they just haven't impressed me.

The other reason I can't lean green is the for the following story:

When I grew up here in Southern Wisconsin, I always remember the neighbor plowing down the 8 acre field across the road on a JD 60. That tractor pulled a 3-16 plow all day and never hicupped...but I never will forget the front end of that Deere rising away from the earth and then falling back down everytime one of those big jugs on it fired.

A few years after that the land was leased to another farmer who ran all Farmall's. A Super M on that same piece of dirt would pull 3-16 just as smooth as any tractor could. It made that JD 60 look like a ride at the county fair the way the front end use to climb into the sky and then back down again. It would have wore me out to sit on that JD all day!

Funny lookin' back on it now...

I pull in the tug pulls against a couple 60's and they can't get in the 5000 pound class with my M. I beat their hind ends in the 6500 class.

What are you basing that on?
There is little difference in size; All are roughly between 40/50HP and both JDs would typicially weigh more than an M?

No there not. A 60 is a big heavy underpowered tractor. A Super M will out work a 70 any day of the week.

there is nothing wrong with green tractors it's teh people who own them thinkthey are absolutly the best thing in the world. yeah i run green but i know like every other tractor john deeres breakd own a lot too. everything i own no matter if it's red, green, orange , or tan & orange it's all broken down. to me a tractor is a tractor if it runs right or at all it's good.

I will probably never collect any john deere equipment. I have been givin a farmall m and a massey harris 44-6. They belonged to my great grandpa and my great great uncle. Because of this I will probably end up being a IH and MH guy. I am only 15 yrs old, but I love antique tractors. Lets face it, red is just a better, more powerful color.

Groovy, I'm 14! I say they're all good tractors that all have their strenghts and weaknesses. I just happen to be an IH guy. I'd get a deere if the price is right, just wouldnt go around bragging my brains out over it. And I think the Deere guys are too full of themselves to even concider other colored tractors. One time, we sent the Holland off to the Deerelership when we got a tiller for it, and the driver who delivered the thing complemented me on it, and asked me a few questiones about it. He seemed real interested, and said its a real comfortable tractor.

No doubt the biggest JD guys around my area farm very little or none at all. The guys that make a living farming usually have some of both. We have a JD corn planter and no-till drill. All our other pieces of equipment are red (well one little pumpkin tractor, a D17). Those two pieces of green equipment cost more to keep going every year than all the red combined. A gentleman at our local tractor club says his JD G will beat anything red at the tractor pull every year. Come to think of it, he's not a real friendly guy either. Anyway, he's right, it will. But its weighted up to run in the 7500# class and it burns your eyes and throat when it drives buy. Nobody else's tractor does that.

My 2 cents, is that its what you grew up on/with. If you had a bad experience with the neighbors JD B, then you'll never own a deere (usually), but If you came home and fired up the old H, you'll probabally stick with IH. I had many bad experiences with a Deere Lawnmower and the dealer, one my mom bought. Thats why when we were looking at compacts, we diddnt even concider deere and got a holland. Love it!!

Thats just my 2cents. Just my opinion

When we were all actively farming, two of my mother's brothers were such JD freaks, they absolutely refused to own anything but John Deere. They wouldn't even by anything aftermarket. They said if John Deere didn't make it, they didn't need it.

For that reason, my father refused to own a piece of JD machinery. We owned just about everything but. I did own a JD 105 combine once. I said I made two mistakes with that combine. The first was when I bought it, the second was when it got on fire, I put the fire out.

Like they say, differences of opinion are what makes horse races.

but the price was right and it looked cool, maybe it will be worth something someday,, I was looking at my "fleet" a while back and it hit me there were IH and FORD all over the place,, the JD stays in the barn and once in a while it comes out to look at,, the IH and the Fords work everyday,,they may be older but they run and work good,my output for today, pat

I think a lot of it is psychological; when a guy is into something and he is somewhat insecure, he will often flock to whatever brand is the "in" brand - be it cars, outboard motors, tractors, shotguns - whatever. He is insecure and therefore, he especially needs to feel he has the best.
Selecting the "in" brand gives him false confidence. He is "in with the in-crowd" now.
Then, he further masks his insecure feelings by acting superior or snooty, and putting down any other brand, since he sees other brands as threats to his already fragile level of confidence.
Certainly not all owners of John Deere tractors are insecure. But, I believe most of the unfriendly jerks are - at least to some degree. mike

IH has not went under. They still build engines and trucks. They just sold the ag division to Tenneco and it is still in business. It is called a merger which is how IH was started to begin with. Typical Deere man response. Try finding parts for some of them old Deeres. Then try finding parts for them old Farmalls.

Randy: I've been around here close to 8 years now, and no one comes close to the IH forum folks on being helpful and showing decent respect for one another. It's not the tractor or at least not post 1965 tractors. I farmed with both IH and Deere, nothing about either especially outstanding about them. The perfect tractor has yet to be built, in my opinion.

It has to be those old two cylinder tractors, I drove one once for half a day. I can understand a farmer putting in long hours on one being a bit short tempered, perhaps not as socialable as most folks. Then it could be, they pay quite a bit more money for tractors, not one damn bit better tractors than the pack.

The green guys around here are to busy bragging on their stuff and criticizing everyone elses stuff to be of any help. A JD guy got his plow soured at a local tractor pull a while back by a IH and had a fit. He accused the weigh master of doctoring the certified scales and all kinds of things. They finally had cto threaten him with the police to get rid of him. Sore loosers they are. Nothing to wrong with green travtors I have had a few myself, but some green owners seem to have a bad attitude in general. Always going on about IH being dead, when in fact you can get parts for most IH tractors to this day.

Hi Randy, If you think the JD forum is strange, try talking to those guys at a tractor pull. If you dont run a deere, forget it. No matter how many times they get beat, they still think there better. Remember, if it runs like a deere, it must smell like a John.... :)JMHO.

Maybe he meant the Oliver forum? ;O)

Talked to an ol' boy last fall that's in the business of rebuilding Internationals and Farmalls. He told me one of my cousins that'd bought two 1066s from him over the years, had "gone green" and bought a late model JD 4x4.

After I heckled him about that a bit, he pointed out that green is the color of envy.

It would be interesting to find out how many of our friends driving green actually turned a furrow, pulled a planter, pulled a baler,or ran a cultivator.
Much of this behavior is learned(call it arrogant green-not to be mistaken with soylent green)Grandpa had a JD so thats what I will have and will ever know.
My point is where I live in John Deere country-20 miles south of Waterloo Iowa-3-jd plants-im surrounded by farmers who are mainly JD but havent forgot any color can pull a plow etc
As has been said in the past in this forum a lot of different colors built this country.I will add that its easy to pledge allegiance to the only one thats still trading on the NYSE with its original name.
Red gets the last laugh around my area.Last week I pulled out the neighbor and his 4430 with my RED IH 756
just my 2 cents

Probably a good point, but it riles up some whose major experience with old farm tractors is as a collector/tinkerer.

Nothing wrong with that, because without such wide interest, we'd all be worse off. Know lots of folks who have never done anything more useful with an old tractor, than buy it, restore it and show it off. But in my opinion, tractors are tractors, regardless of the level of involvement of the owner. Worst offenders in the puffy-chest department in my experience, are those who BOUGHT restored JDs, spend too much time braggin' on 'em and use them for nothing but a trinket.

An uncle who farmed for over 40 years with Farmalls and Internationals, was surrounded by green equipment (JD dealer right up the road). He owned JD balers, a JD combine and some other green implements...but the power was all red, except for a brief flirtation with a 2010 w/industrial loader.

He used to delight in un-sticking a green tractor too, especially with his WFE 560 gasser. Kinda miss the sound of a 2-lunger off in the distance in the summer, but not enough to actually own one. ;O)

A buddy has several self-restored JD "parade tractors": A, B, L and a couple whose model I've forgotten. He did most of his actual farm work with a 2000 series JD diesel, a little 70s-vintage Ford 3000, Oliver Super 55 and a ratty old Farmall M.

Also it miffs them that I can build a tractor bigger and better (I update them too) than theirs from a rustbucket found on a fencerow for thousands less than what they spent on their new modern green plastic and metal contraptions.

No plastic or flimsy sheetmetal on mine!
