2 Questions For An H

Question 1: Can the flywheel be taken out of the tractor without splitting it? I know the clutch can be worked on from beneath, but the flywheel seems a bit big for that opening.

Question 2: Is the ring gear on the flywheel replaceable? Can I cut the current one off and weld a new one on?

Thanks for the help.

Someone posted that an engine will stop in the same spot almost all the time. If that is true, couldn't a flywheel be removed and then re-installed 180* from it's original position, as long as the bad spot wasn't totally shot?

If you were Superman, you might be able to do that without splitting it. If you try it, remember that I was just thinking out loud.

Andy: You don't have to cut off the old ring gear. Just heat it enough so that it expands and it will come right off. mike

Dad bought a 'C' years ago with a bad spot on the ring gear so what we did was we heated it up and then just turned it on the flywheel and it's worked great ever since.

The tractor definitely must be split to remove the flywheel.

Once the flywheel is off the ring gear is easily removed. Just warm it evenly with a rosebud flame - it should fall right off the flywheel.

Suggestion: If you go to all the trouble to split the tractor, spend the $40 or so for a new ring gear instead of flipping the old one. Also if the clutch is at all questionable now is the time to replace - it'll never be easier!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I plan on rebuilding the clutch while we're in there, and I'm going to buy a new ring gear instead of flipping the old one. This is my mom's tractor that was a gift from me. Thing is, I get to wrench on it if mom and dad buy the parts. Works great for me : ) Thanks again.

A follow up to that - Do ya have to split the tractor to pull the engine?

Thanks for verifying that for me - That's how I read it in the manual but was looking for a short cut.
