Cub w/ External Coil and Mag

Picked up a Cub yesterday with an external coil and is configured for a magneto, so I"m guessing the mag is not operational at this point. I don"t see any resistor and that might explain why the previous owner was not getting a spark.. the 12 volt system (has 12 v battery) most likely burned up the points.

I like all original machines, but I would like to get the little Cub going again on a mag and retain the 12 volt system (charge, start, and lights only, no 12 v ignition) to see for a while what I"ve got until I can run off the mag. Suggestions welcome for a short duration run while I get the mag rebuilt.

Been out of the loop a while.. who rebuilds Cub mags these days?

Below it is noted that Magman will rebuild your Cub Mag. I got a rebuilt mag for my Cub from him about a year ago. He likely has enough parts to send you a rebuilt one if you don't insist on using the one you have now. He will give you credit for yours when you send it to him after you intall the rebuilt one. That way, you won't have to be without the tractor while the mag is being rebuilt. He told me how much credit I would get for the old mag from a picture. My rebuilt mag is working great.

Some coils have an internal resister, and run directly off 12 volts. first get it going with the coil,. probably points or condenser. then more than likely all you will need to do is replace the internal mag coil. Teh switch on a mag grounds it to kill it, so you will need a different one for that.

You can probably get the converted mag running by checking for battery voltage on both small terminals with the points open. You need the ignition switch on. Clean those points with some
320 wet or dry. Hal
PS: Here's another tractor that has the mag converted to a distributor.

MagMan might fix your mag, I know he fixes H4 magnetos, but your Cub might have a J4. Check his site, it is farmallmagneto.com

Mag man is still on the site so he would be a good place to start on getting it rebuilt. But how are you going to run it with out the mag if you send it to be rebuilt there is no way you can do that. All the other guy did was turn the mag into a distubutor and doing so works just fine and he may have used a 12 volt coil and doing so he would not need a resister

I won't send it off until I've run it a while. I'd like to see what shape the rest of the tractor is in. Maybe run the engine for a few hours, run it up to temp mowing, check the oil pressure, that sort of stuff.

In that case you should be able to replace the points and condenser and get it going. You can also buy rebuilt mags and that way you could have a running tractor then once you got the rebuilt mag you could just put it on and send back the old one as a core or keep it just in case you needed it again
