I recently purchased a 310b case backhoe, which does not charge. I have installed a new generator and battery. I have used the trouble shooting tips/instructions recently published on this site and BobM's wiring diagrams, but still no luck. When I turn the ignition key on it shows + "Charge"?? When the tractor is running, I get NO charging. The first thing I did was to polarize the generator. I have also jumped the terminals as suggested to check out the regulator, but still NO charge. The ammeter shows "hot" on both post. I checked out the generator by grounding it and got it to run. I should mention it is a 12 volt systen with a neg. ground. I have searched the other site but haven't had any luck there. I would appreciate suggestions you folks might have.

Perhaps it was converted from Pos to Neg ground n the ammeter leads werent swapped makikng it register bass ackwards like Rusty was talking about???? Id swap ammeter leads so it swings over to - discharge if lights or ignition are turned on engine not running,,,,, ,,,repolarize the genny to make sure,,,,, ,fire her up n see what happens !!!!! !!!!

On the ammeter its Supply terminal should have only one wire, the one to the battery/starter, while its other Load terminal is what wires to BAT on the VR plus feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights n ignition via their switches BAT input terminals.

Once polarized fire her up n ifffff fff shes charging the lights will glow noticeably brighter from slow idle to fast RPM and/or the battery voltage should rise from 12.6 to the 13 to 14 bolt range as posted below.

Regarding that genny Motor Test,,,,, Start with the gennys field dead grounded (belt off of course) n apply hot battery voltage to its ARM post n she ought to spin (armature n brushes okay) but then if you unground the Field she ought to speed up noticeably indicating the field windings are likely okay. It needs to pass BOTH (spin then speed up) tests.

Sure the battery is okay and will accept a charge????

let us know

Got a chance to work on the backhoe today and the first thing I did was to switch wires on the ammeter and it did show discharge when I turned the key on. I then started the backhoe and got it to charge by grounding the "F" terminal on the VR to the tractor. Also noticed that one of the contacts on the VR closed when I did this. However, my hand held voltage meter only showed 13.7 up from around 12.4 when it wasn't charging. I still don't know my what problem is ... wiring or VR? Any suggestions?? Another thing I noticed was that the generator was quite HOT to the touch. Is this normal?? I appreciate everybody's help so far and would once again welcome any suggestions to fix my problem.

I didn't get a chance to work on the tractor yesterday, It rained all day and there might be more coming today. I live in the Mid. Michigan area. The last time I worked on it. I did the motor test and the generator did speed up once I ungrounded the Field. As for the battery it is new and has been starting the tractor, but I don't know how much longer because it is getting weak. I will keep you posted on how I make out.

Check the charging voltage at the battery with a volt meter and see what your voltage is with the engine at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Make sure all your wire connections are clean and tight. You may need to have your local shop check your regulator and generator on their test stand. You should be getting around 14.5 volts at the battery. Hal

Your ammeter is wired backwards, reverse the leads and it should indicate a dis-charge - with the key on and engine not running. The charging system, when functioning properly, will NOT indicate a charge IF the battery is FULLY charged.
